Snarkier Than You's New Moon Review

On Friday, Jenny Jerkface and I scurried off for New Moon: Round Three. We wanted to make sure it was fresh in our minds as we sat down to [finally!] discuss... Plus we just wanted to see it again. Just because.

"Twilight 2: The Precious Returns! Then Goes Away... Then Comes Back Again!"

Where to begin???

Let's start simply: I think that New Moon is a good movie. Um, I don't think it's a great movie. I DO think it's a better overall movie than Twilight (although despite that I think I still love Twilight more, but I'll save that for some other time). This isn't going to be a diatribe on how the book was different from the movie; we expected that and hadn't reread New Moon in the weeks before the movie's release because neither one of wanted to got bat-shit crazy picking apart the "book vs. movie" details. Although there might be a few things we can't resist noting...

Things I really loved about the movie:

Charlie/Billy Burke and "the humans" in general were great in this movie. They had some of the best lines, provided comic relief in an otherwise pretty somber tale, and stole the show more than a few times. Jessica in particular was great in the scene where Bella goes for a motorcycle ride. In face, that entire scene is really well done.

Victoria/Rachelle Lafevre = Beautiful. Feral. Dangerous. Chilling. I LOVE her parts. Bryce Dallas Howard, you have some really fierce military-looking lace-up boots to fill. We'll give you a chance but don't let us down. We'll miss you, Rachelle. A lot. Your running-through-the-woods sequence is mesmerizing. (P.S. I saw a pic of "Eclipse Victoria" in those very same boots while searching for pics for this post, and...well...I r-e-a-l-l-y miss Rachelle.)

Kristen Stewart does a much better job in New Moon. She's less stuttery and blinky - but not SO much so that it changes the character entirely, which it would have if she'd lost ALL the stuttery-blinky-noddy-ness. You might still be able to squeak a drinking game out of this, but you won't end up in the hospital from alcohol poisoning. Plus she looks breathtakingly beautiful in a lot of the scenes. OK maybe she's supposed to look like "every girl" and she doesn't but fuck it, this is a Hollywood blockbuster and nobody looks normal. I'm over it. I like pretty.

The wolves and special effects. They came a long way since the very first "fursplode!" was revealed. Which is good, because at the time it was outright laughable. The final wolves that made it to the screen were pretty awesome - huge, like they're supposed to be! Love that this worked out, because I was a lil' nervous after "Rabid Lassie" busted onto the scene. So well done. The effects in general were a million times better; I don't think they had the budget they needed to make it right in Twilight.

Look out! A half-dressed Fisher-Price wolf is falling from the sky!
(SO glad they improved this! whew...)

Robert Pattinson (natch!) also honed his acting chops and delivered a better performance than he did in Twilight. Plus he looked good doing it (but I like Twilight-Edwards hair better)! The clock tower scene (mipplegate, schmipplegate - it's hair or something - whatever - RPatts has normal man-nips! stop staring at them already! look...lower. you'll be fine.). I don't care if it took a makeup artist hours to airbrush on those abs - it works for me! When he fights with Felix and his entire torso is heaving, I don't even care a lick that vampires wouldn't get winded. Who cares? Keep breathing, baby. You do it do well. I was also happy that his accent wasn't distractingly bad. I wasn't reminded of Christopher Walken-meets-The-Sopranos (I am convinced that Twilight-era RPatts studied up for his American accent by watching The Godfather, gangster movies, and HBO). Granted, he wasn't on screen most of the time (a downer, I know...), but still. Better. I am distracted by the "Remember Me" trailer every time I see the movie and think it looks amazing and his accent is spot-on but I don't want to compare apples and oranges here. Let's just say that while I wasn't initially counting the days until that movie comes out, now I am...

Taylor Lautner did a great job (we already covered that!) and I thought that Dakota Fanning was an amazing Jane. Alec was well-cast, too. The Volturi in general = great casting.

Things I have mixed feelings on:

Makeup. It was mostly better in New Moon. Well, at least it was for Edward. The lines of demarcation in Twilight made me wonder how much they had budgeted for white pancake makeup (my final guess is somewhere between $9.99 and $29.99 - no more). There were still a few moments where they could have done better with the body makeup (Edward should be one color!). And for the love of all things holy, will whoever does Robert Pattinson's makeup please put away the fucking lipstick already?! Seriously people - have you SEEN his lips? They're fucking perfect. Stop gilding the lily, ok? Please? Give him a little lip balm and leave it. Thanks.

No amount of Bordeaux lipstick will improve upon this. Really.

We saw a lot of things in the trailers that didn't make it to the final cut of the movie. For better or for worse. It makes me hopeful for a dvd that will be chock-full of extras/deleted/extended scenes. Fingers crossed!

Where were you? I want this scene back.

While I liked the Volturi characters, I thought they looked a little too normal.

Things that I didn't like so much/hated/made me laugh when I wasn't supposed to:

The vampire contact lenses. I haven't really heard anyone else say much on this, but I absolutely hated the contact lenses in New Moon pretty much from the first time I saw them. They look reptilian or alien or something. And it seemed to prevent their eyes from looking sufficiently expressive - Edward had to rely too much on his eyebrows. And his eyes looked irritated and reddish. Fine, I wasn't distracted by actually SEEING the contacts themselves like I was in Twilight, but that's mostly because Chris Wietz didn't use close-ups the way Catherine Hardwicke did. When JJ and I took NM Full-Size Edward out of his box, I spent several minutes scooting around in front of him trying to figure out where he was looking/where his gaze fell. It's hard to tell. I felt the same way about Edward a lot of the time he was on screen. And it was annoying.

Bells chiming every time you saw vampy sparkles. I didn't pay too much attention to this until someone pointed it out to me and then I couldn't NOT notice it. Do the sparkles really have to be accompanied by wind-chimes? I don't get it. I don't like it. But the sparkle effect itself was an improvement.

The wigs. I am done for in Eclipse when they stick one on Bella. And for NM, it's bad enough... Jacob? Jasper? Alice? Rosalie? Ugh. If they keep hitting Rosalie and Jasper with the ugly stick, they'll be able to make small children cry by the time Breaking Dawn hits theaters. And these are attractive people! Stop giving Jasper poodle-hair! Rosalie shouldn't look like a madam at a high-end whorehouse! Did they stop even trying to make her look like the most beautiful woman on the planet? How about some nice extensions? Is that asking too much for a movie that's going to make a gazillion dollars?

Alice's vision. EVERYONE hated this. Without exception. And I hate it too. What the hell were they thinking?! Is there not ONE person on-set who could have told them this was even more of a fail than the wardrobe in the rest of the movie, which was kinds lame-ish and made Edward look like an old man - yes I get that he's 109 but never in the books did it say that he dressed in a way which would be considered old-fashioned or antiquated. Hey movie people - you need one of us: an obsessed fan to say "that's a terrible outfit and YES the Volvo needs to be silver!" We'll work cheap! But please - you need us. Alice would never allow Edward or Bella to dress like that. Never. Ever. I cringed. So did everyone else in the theater. Plus it kind of sucks that THAT was the first look we got at "Vampire Bella" - I think that reveal should have been saved for whoever directs Breaking Dawn. If the screenwriter put that in, shame on her. And if Chris Wietz ends up directing Breaking Dawn, he needs to do better there.

We'll probably talk about New Moon until you beg us to stop, so it we didn't cover something here, it's probably in the works (and by "the works" I mean our collectively addled little brains). Stay tuned!

  1. once again STY...we are thinking a lot of the same things at the same time. Tonight, I posted some observations but not quite as eloquently as you.

Loved every single scene with Victoria, especially the chase.

I hated the contacts and whore make up too. The vampires would never be able to blend in looking like that.

  2. Edward was dressed like McLovin in Alice's vision, just sayin'. Maybe it was an Alice prank, maybe she was watching Superbad on the flight to Italy. Whatever that shit was, it was comical. In a bad way. :)

It did distract me from Alice's fugly poncho and scarf, though. WTF was that, wardrobe department?

  3. Just wanted to share my thoughts as well...Warning: this is going to be long!

    - The background music / score sucks. I think that is why I wasn’t completely and entirely swept away with the E/B break-up scene and the E/B reunion scene. The score could have been more dramatic, conveyed more emotions and with more crescendo when those 2 important scenes were being played. It sounded monotone and “thin” the whole time. The song, Possibility, fitted the ‘”months” scene perfectly, though. I actually felt the sadness and numbness while watching that scene. And, Hearing Damage scene with Victoria running was definitely a win!

    - Kristen Stewart played Bella really, really well. She carried the entire film all on her own. I just wished she shed some tears when she reunited with Edward in Italy – after she pushed him inside, before they kissed. Could have been more dramatic that way. Otherwise, she was good. The “months,” the nightmares and the email scenes were my favorite scenes of hers. Heartbreaking! Oh and the cliff scene – even the little smile she made just before jumping. So exactly like how I pictured it when I read the book.

    - I wish CW made the Edward Bella intimate scenes longer. I didn’t mind that Edward was gone for most of the movie (Who am I kidding? I did mind!!!) but I thought the bedroom scene after they reunited in Italy should have been expounded to better convey how much they mean to each other. It felt rushed. Didn’t quite show the devotion and the love they have for each other clearly – as it was in the book. If you’re seeing New Moon without having scene Twilight (although, it would make me wonder why the heck not!), you wouldn’t understand why Bella chooses Edward over Jacob. It makes Bella appear shallow because based on this film, Jacob is the better man. I suppose that was the entire premise of the storyline but still…another 2 or 3 minutes of E/B discussing their feelings for each other couldn’t have possibly hurt.

    - This is going to sound pathetic but I sort of feel the kissing scene between E/B when they reunited in Italy were too chaste. I mean, you see each other for the first time in 6 months with one almost committing suicide and you kiss each other that way – too tamely? It could have been a little more passionate, a few seconds longer and with a little bit more dramatic background music (again!). Granted they were in the middle of the Volturi lair but still…that was a pivotal scene. It needed tiny bit more emphasis.

    - Not going to dwell on Edward’s horrible wardrobe and make-up. Enough was said about them.

    - Loved the entire Volturi scene.

    - Agree about Billy Burke and Anna Kendrick's acting. They were both excellent!

Needless to say, I loved the film. Saw it 4 times now! Haha! Of course, I will still watch it some more even with all my little complaints above. Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’’s love story is epic! They will be remembered in years and years to come…definitely this generation’s Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler or Titanic's Jack and Rose!

Oh and lastly, Edward walking towards Bella in the parking lot = HOT!!! Robert Pattinson is the perfect Edward!!! :-)

  4. Just a few additions --

I loved Edward's tweed pants. I thought that the fit of those pants was P-E-R-F-E-C-T on his body. Yum.

I never saw any clips of the deleted scene you mentioned (Edward on Bella's bed). where did you see that?

KStew looked beautiful in some scenes -- especially when she was asking Alice for her vote on the issue of Bella's mortality. It was the first time that I thought KStew was worthy to be called RPattz's woman. She was stunning in that moment -- and I personally don't swing that way at all, although she could take me there.

    Just sayin'

  5. I pretty much said everything ealier in JJ's but one thing I wanted to add that I thought was so good about those first few months after Edward left is seeing Bella in the caferia alone at the "Cullen" table. That was either written differently or I remember it differently (I thought I remember her sitting with everyone else, but just not talking), but seeing her just sitting there, hands in her pockets staring off into space = gut wrenching.
    that's all for now!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I thought the picture of Edward on Bella's bed in the woods is from a dream sequence in Eclipse...God I need a hobby...Oh Twi-smut...

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes, KStew did look amazingly beautiful and I can't figure out why. Is it A) the result of adding two years of maturity or B) she's gettin' some RPattz and she's positively glowing? I'll take B for the win! I really didn't like the placement of songs except the ones already mentioned, Possibility and Hearing Damage. I am going to hold out on getting the Eclipse soundtrack until after I've seen the movie. I hope the song choice is better too. Loved the Twilight music, New Moon not so much. I am still undecided about the contact lenses. But to be honest, when Edward is shirtless I wasn't exactly looking at his eyes. They could have looked like Marty Feldman and I wouldn't have cared. The CGI wolves and vampy sparkles were a definate improvement. I must have been swept away in the moment, because I've seen it 3 times and have not heard any wind-chimes. I shall have to sacrifice and endure another viewing to continue my research on this matter, heh.

  8. @CTB--I was bitterly disappointed with the scenes you mentioned between Edward and Bella. I expectied SOOOO much more, the intimacy was totally lacking. Bah!!
@Sty--CW said he was Team Jacob. I think the wardrobe choice they went with for Edward was evidence of that fact.
Even with the horrible clothes and bad lipstick Edward was still B-E-A-U-TIFUL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. @Z any M... LLLLMFAO! Eyes like Marty Feldman! I have to say in that scene they did do VERY WELL with Edward's wardrobe. MMMmmmmMMM.

I hafta say, that I was very pleased with KStews look in this movie, understated beauty. She rocked the look.

  10. Here are a few thoughts:

    1. Wolves. The wolves were generally fine, except the first scene of Sam/black wolf growling at Laurent was really not convincing at all. And I agree with the commenter who said that that Embry and the other minor wolfpack member needed to do more situps. But Chaske Spencer.... and HIS VOICE! ... are yummy. Good lawd.

    2. I love RPattz, don't get me wrong, but Taycob's abs were so blindingly awesome that the shirtless Edward scene was pretty much a fail for me. He just can't compete. Maybe the emo-ness interferes with the testosterone needed for ab development or something.

    3. My favorite Volturi is Demetri, by far. (Did you notice that when they're all in the elevator going to see Aro, Demetri and Felix are glaring at Bella like she still smells of wolf? Heh!) He has two lines in the movie and ROCKS them both. Can't figure out whether he and Heidi are supposed to be a pair, though. Hope he gets tons of lines in the next movie.

    4. I'll never buy anybody except Rachelle as Victoria. End of story. Replacing her is criminal.

    5. I've never bought Nikki Reed as Rosalie. I like her, don't get me wrong, but she's just not "beautiful" enough. Although I did think she looked better in NM than in Twilight.

    6. Jacksper's Texan accent in this film made this cowgirl swoon.

    I'll shut up now.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thanks for the breakdown STY! I am pretty much in total agreement with you too. (see epic long comment under JJ's last post).

The one thing I did not comment on were the contacts. I, too, did not like them. I thought they were way to light and if I EVER met anyone with eyes like that I would scream like a banshee and run in the other direction...those eyes do NOT blend in with human eyes at all. I am still really pissed that they didn't have Alice's eyes black when she comes to Bella's house and Edward's eyes black in Volterra--why the fuck not? Such a simple thing to stick to the story. I don't get that. Same with the "silver" volvo. Why did that have to change? I am totally with you STY--we need consulting and I will work for cheap, cheap.

Somehow I missed the bells chiming with sparkling Edward...and I have seen it three times. I did not hear that at all. Maybe my mind went into SAFE MODE and did not allow me to hear it? Guess, I need to go see it again....for research purposes of course.

I don't think I will ever think any of these movies are great movies but I did think New Moon was good whereas, I thought Twilight was just OK (actually pretty crappy but I wanted to love it) with some great scenes and pretty good casting. That said, you know I love everything about Twilight regardless.

Oh, and I am totally with you on RPattz's lips.....completely freaking perfect on their own...just a little sheer matte gloss and all would be good.

Seriously, I want to know who they have at the test screenings? They really need to fly us in and get some good Twitarded feedback (David Slad I am looking at you!)

  12. I hafta agree with all the comments made. Left the theater feeling a little dazed.

I have been dying to see New Moon since it came out and finally was able to sneak away to see it by myself. I thought that because I had read some harsh reviews that maybe it had colored my perspective on things.

I didn't care for the music and I did buy it when it came out and hoped it would make better sense and at least fit the movie, it didn't. Twilight music was much better. As far as the movie, I so wanted to love it but it fell short, and I was disappointed. Thinking back I do remember the chimey thing with the sparkle effect but I sorta blocked it out and tried to pay attention. I didn't hate the movie but I agree the clothing needed help and I hope they read all the commentary and fix it for Breaking Dawn cause like it or not Eclipse is already in the can. All we can do is pray with the different director, that the clothes and makeup have improved.

I do intend on buying the DVD when it comes out and yes, I definitely will go to the cheap seat theater to see it again, but I will not rush out to see it at full price.

    ReplyDelete
  13. -Agreed!
-On the contacts! They made their eyes so messed up. When E&B are talking about forever at the end, I kinda wanted to let E know that Bella was know where near were he was looking...like not even close.
-Loved Loved Loved the whole letters to Alice! So smart!
-Rob's 15 mins in the movie were perfect. When the Volturi told him no, the look on his face...kinda made my little heart sad.
-No much of a fan of Grampaward, but the dude looks hot in a Tweed suit, I did miss the bronze bouffant.
-Sometimes I thought the score didn't fit the scene, like with the wolves...the score sounded like fries where coming :/
-Maybe thirds times a charm for the wigs and makeup?
-In "Bella the Vamp" piece....when did E&B become Amish?
    -Humans were such win!
-Is there something between like and love? Cause that's were I'm with NM. I loved the color palette CW picked for the movie, Kristen did a fantastic job, the CGI, the wins to the losses rules out in the end.
-I can not wait for epicly awkward commentary on the dvd 8D
    -March 12 2010, I know where I'll be!

*Sorry if this post twice, me and blogger are in a minnie love/hate as of late.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I too was kind of questioning Remember me..but after that trailer I can't wait! I can't wait to see him w/o the white face and lipstick! While I love me some Edward, Tyler looks absolutely yummy!
I'm w/ you on nipplegate just look lower - and the heaving/breathing tummy - well I could have watched that alone for hours :D
And I agree of course w/ everything else you said! KStew rocked w/ the less twitching, Charlie always cracks me up (reminds me of my dad!), Taycob- I'm going take a beating for this -I think his acting itself was great - but he looks too much like his damn barbie! What is UP w/ that shit? He just doesn't do it for me anymore, shirt or no shirt, he seriously looks all plasticy to me! I'll take me some Rpattz anyday over that....
For the soundtrack - I didn't like it till I saw the movie, I think it fits now though - but never did hear DeathCab's song
I like the coloring better, and the CGI, however the scene w/ Paul phases - Sam TOTALLY annoys the shit out of me w/ his weird ass stance...

  15. I too hated the contacts and you said correctly, almost reptilian. Edward’s make up too at times was way over done. In the Romeo Juliet scene in class, Edward is ghastly white with a really mauve lipstick. Really, in RL, someone would think this kid had a skin disease. It was too much for me to bear. Ok, just had to add that in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You said about whether the screenwriter put tha vampire Bella bit in. If you look back at the leaked 2nd draft script that was everywhere back in May, it has this in:

EXT. FOREST - DAY (ALICE’S VISION)

Edward hunts a deer. Matching his pace is another vampire - Bella! She’s pale and beautiful - she and Edward smile at each other as they take a last grand leap for the kill –

So, at some point somebody said "Nah, that's shit, let's have them frolicking in really awful clothes instead, everyone will LOVE that!"

Oh, but the "You can go to hell" bit wasn't in the 2nd draft either, I guess rewrites can be a blessing or a curse ;o)

I need to see NM again soon, once isn't enough!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Like you and everyone else, I was surprised that the contacts were that bright.

I also thought that the scene in Volterra was too short. You don't really get to experience that anticipation of whether Bella will make it in time to save E. The ending seemed rushed to me. I really wished that they talked more in the bedroom. I get it why they immediately cut to her in bed, but maybe I didn't hear because of all the talk in the theater, but I don't remember Edward asking Bella why she jumped off the cliff, and her telling him about wanting to hear his voice. That was pretty important.

Anyhoo, the one scene I really did like, visually, I mean, is when Sam jumps into the water. It was splendidly shot, and I wish there were more moments like that in the film.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I also hated the "Alice's vision"-scene. It would have been so much better if they had shown something like Bella's first hunt as a vampire. I imagine the part where she jumps down on the mountain lion in the tree. That would have been cool.

  20. OMG, I just realized, "Remember me" is a merger of my two obsessions: LOST and Twilight. Yaaaay!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have commented of JJ's post, but apparently I have more to say.

Thanks for pointing the contacts, STY. They are freaky looking.

I was also happy they were able to fix the "rabid lassie" sequence. I was cringing but it came out allright.

And the end, they could have extended it a bit more.I don't know what's the obsession about cutting 20seconds here and there in order to keep the flow of the movie. If they didn't had scenes like forest vamp Bella, I could almost buy this excuse; but with that kind of "bucket of cold water", please, c'mon. The end should have been longer.
Though I did like the actual ending scene... The way the question lingers in the air.

One thing I would also like is if they incorporated the deleted scenes into the movie (like Lord of the Rings). I hate the "ok, so this goes between that ant the other" effort. Maybe I'm just lazy.

    Kisses.

@Jelena: glad you already saw the movie. I thought it was only on in december or something...

  22. One more thing: the meadow scene was re-done, wasn't it? They didn't have that much flowers in the first one, right?

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Selene - yeah, the official premier is on December 3rd, but I went to a special pre-screening organized by Twilight fans (members of Twilight Serbia forum), but they were so annoying that I can't really tell whether I liked the film or not - we literally had the Beatlemania screaming, then there was laughing, then near constant talking, hating of Bella. Phew. It's a miracle no one got hurt. :D

  24. Thank fuck for Twitardia after the shitty fucking monday morning I've just had/am having, bloody Hobbit (the boss) is off sick, the computers crashed and it wasn't even half 8; then another member of staff was off sick while the other arrived coughing and hacking. I was forced, forced to spend time with the sick and needy, personally-I work for a Doctor. I DONT do sick and needy. I have shit loads of work which I am vigorously ignoring to look at the beloved Mr Pattinsons beautiful body and snakelike hips leading down to the wonderous....licks lips, deep breath. Anyway I know you're all reviewing again but I've done that and fuck it how many times can I say I liked it, it wasn't fantastic but it was good, bit like first time sex! Anyway, you lot make me smile and I bloody well needed it today otherwise I was going to kick someone in the bollocks and blame my hormones.
Fucking Hobbits, they want shooting, I bet his Hobbit senses were tingling, I bet he KNEW the buggering computers were going to fucking well crash-ARGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  25. "it wasn't fantastic but it was good, bit like first time sex!" - hahahaha!!

a few random notes - i could have cone on FOREVER with this post - i agree with most everything in the comments thus far--
    - i didn't like the score and found it alternately distracting and just wrong for the emotion i thought should be conveyed in the scene (there was one time - i forget the exact moment - where it seemed like something that would better fit a horror movie. just bad.
    - i hated just about every non-human outfit in this movie. well, mostly vamps. although the jorts got kinda old, too. : )
    - i could (and might!) write a whole post about "the birthday scene" - the million candles, 100k worth of flowers (yes i know that alice goes all out decorating but what was up with the numerous topiary-looking floral balls??), the stiff outfits - all of it! AND they never even showed the gift from Esme and Carlisle that she cut herself on. for that matter, they should have shown Bella ripping the stereo out of her truck.
    - i thought that the beginning and end of the movie was rushed. the middle dragged out a bit. but i felt that way during the non-Edward parts of the book to, sooo... but they could have added more Edward/Bella at the end. It was a little too hasty. we ALL would have loved a three-hour movie! Bring on the director's cut - please!
    - the DC4C song plays over the end credits (like the radiohead song on Twilight
    - that "missing" pic/scene above is a dream sequence but it's NM not Eclipse and I'm hoping to see it in the dvd extras - woo!

ok back to the grind after a looong weekend (i am grumpy at the prospect of returning to work, i have to admit - but this has helped my mood tremendously!).

    : )

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Snarkier Than You - You're absolutely right, they should've done a three hour movie. Why not? It's like they still don't get the scope of our obsession, and that they should appeal to us. Hopefully, they'll do a better job with Eclipse.

Btw, I like that BD poster of Bella that you posted.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In no offense to JJ, I can appreciate your review so much more because I agreed with the majority of it.

I liked NM, I didn't love it. I've seen it twice and will probably not see it again 'til it comes out on DVD. If my daughter wanted to see it again I would take her but given that she's still so extremely pissed off over how it ended, the chance of me seeing it again in theaters is slim to none.

You probably didn't see my comment from one of your earlier posts, but one of the first things I said was that the vampire's contacts were awful. At least in Twilight they were much less noticeable which is supposed to be the point, right? The vampires want to blend in with the humans, not look like lizards!

I laughed at the part where you mentioned how Edward should be one color. I laughed when he was shirtless because he was only white from the neck up. SO noticeable!

With regards to the wigs, I'm guessing that they didn't want to put a whole lotta' money into them when Jasper and Rosalie were only in the movie for about a minute. Nikki Reed looked SO much better in Twilight having colored her hair and bleached her skin. Here's to hoping that they'll look more realistic for the next movie.

I'm still not done mourning the loss of Rachelle in Eclipse. I like BDH's acting but I just can't envision her pulling off that role. I hope Eclipse won't be a huge disappointment.

By the way, if you go to Stephenie Meyer's website, she says that Edward's car is a dark silver, not black.

  30. I completely agree on all points. I fear that if I start to write my thoughts we'd be here "a while"! So, I'll just say Great Post...wonderful critique.....and thanks...now I am desperate to go see the movie...yet again!!!

  31. I'll preface the upcoming complaints by saying that I LOVED the movie. As in, it made me practically whistle and skip around for a week straight because this movie was not an utter train wreck like the last one (remake, anyone?) And on to the whining.

Not to be an anal detail-whore, but...
    - In Alice's vision of Bella running through the woods in the ice-blue silk dress, HER EYES SHOULD BE RED. She is a newborn vampire.
    - Alice sees still images, not videos.
    - Rosalie looking like a trannie. Sorry, Nikki, you are gorgeous IRL, but you just don't do well as a blonde.
    - Jasper is supposed to be hot. Jackson is delicious and then some (mmm...). Something is lost in translation here.
    - Alice's wardrobe. She wore that dress with the cutouts to prom, so clearly she doesn't have a problem showing skin - why is she covered from head to toe in granny clothes in every scene in NM?

I completely agree that they need to hire (or let volunteer) a panel of maybe half a dozen rabid Twitards to consult on the movie so that these mistakes are not made again.

All in all, though, Chris Weitz is my hero. If I had to sacrifice an appendage to get him to direct BD, well, I could make do with one arm.

  32. Mental day in work today - thought I had posted this earlier - but can't seem to see it.

Interview with the Tish Monaghan, Costume Designer for NM.Looks like CW and powers that be wanted a more mature Edward?!?!! And Rob wanted a suit??

    Check it out:

  33. I feel so bad for Rob. Seriously, look at the stills that were leaked of him shirtless compared to the final edit.

The boy worked his ASS off to look good in that shot and then they made him look like shit. Pisses me off!

  34. @Rob's Bitch - thanks for the links! You're right, he did look so much better in those. WTF happened?!

    ReplyDelete
  35. @ Z Any Mouse - I don't know. The only thing I can come up with is they wanted him to look beaten down from the months of despair? I mean come on - he already has to be compared to Taylor's body- builder physique and then they make him look WORSE than he did? Ughhhh....

I now have to scour the web to defend my man's body against nasty comments! Like I have time for this shit ;>)

  36. One quick comment about Alice's vision. At the midnight opening, the whole theatre broke into laughter. It was like we all thought Alice was giving Aro the "young romantics in love" vision that he wanted, but everyone know wasn't real.

When I went to see New Moon with my friends on Sunday, not a single person laughed at the ridiculous vision Alice had.

What is up with that? Same vision, different audience.

  38. ok, so i left my two cents on jj's post, but i've been pondering it, and there are two things that seem to me to be the most egregious problems in new moon.

    1. somehow the makeup and wardrobe departments make ridiculously attractive people (rob, ashley, nikki, jackson) look unattractive. you really have to put some effort into it to accomplish that.

    2. the last third of the movie is rushed. the volturi, the happy reunion, the vote, the edward/jacob confrontation. all these areas needed to be expounded upon, just slightly, and the movie would have been vastly more effective emotionally and cinematically.

    ReplyDelete
  39. TY - please tell me you & JJ are gonna keep that RM Clock up on the site..please?

STY - YAY - You & I feel the exact same way about the NM Eyes. ARGH! Yes - They left'em red rimmed and expressionless. Twilight, yes, never would have worked with those in .with all the close ups.

And you had the balls (yeah we all know you got those) to say you liked Edward's Twilight hair better. I actually do too. there's one But..and that is Rob looks so much older in NM - that the Twi-Hair may have been weird. We went to see NM and they showed Twilighht before hand..and there is such a difference in Rob's maturity. And the suit doesn't help..but it's in his JAW..and face.

I thought the Cullens looked better and mroe modern in Twilight. The Cullens in Nm looked like some fantasy our mother's would want to see us in. Not good. Ok I think Nikki as Rosalie is just not the right fit. OK - I grew up in NYC so please bare with me - I know I'm NOT talkin about you & JJ..but twilight Rosalie looked like Jersey mall girl. I thought NM Rosalie was an improvement..but still off. And WTF did they put Carlisle in for the Vote scene. I thought a friggin Pipe was going come up in his right hand. Give Me Twilight's Designers in a heartbeat.

so I'm ready for regular hunky Rob in remember me..and some Eclipse Leg Hitch with some good kissy face from the dog or the vamp. and hopefully some music i will fucking remember when I walk out of the cinema.

  40. i loved your review! agree on all accounts. i would add that the one scene from the book that i really missed being in the film is when charlie talks to alice about bella's mental state after edward's departure. i get that it was cut for time, and to follow along with the quickened pace of the movie, but it was such a good scene and billy burke would've nailed it. i've only seen the movie once (pathetic, huh?) and that's the only thing that stuck out after my first viewing.

that and the horrendous frolicking vision - our whole theater laughed at that one too.

  42. Ha - love the Remember Me countdown meter!

I SQUEEEEED in the theater as soon as Rob said "Gandhi" in the trailer, and I realized I was ONLY true Rob psychofan in the theater.

  43. OK STY - i just wandered over to IMDB to check out the production team for eclipse.

BAD news-same costume designer (but different from twilight).

Same Cinematographer..Same art director and Same Make-up!! Please tell me not the NM eyes. **sigh**.

Good news is that there appears to be no original music composer - so Maybe Slade is going with all popular music. I almost ripped my ears off in NM listening to yet more orchestral accompaniment.

  45. Finally both of your comments...I was going crazy with the wait!

I love the score but agree that a few pieces seemed out of place in the movie. I hate the soundtrack but liked where they placed the songs..so go figure.

I too ♥ Edward's crazy hair in Twilight. In NM his style looks older and less like SM's description of "touseled bronzy hair" Overall, E. just does not look like a highschooler in NM.

I really wanted more romance in this movie--agree the happy times at the beginning were rushed and WTH where was the "blackest kind of blasphemy" and "without you my life was like a moonless night..." lines. Epic fail at the Swoonworthy Edward we all love.

If I had not read the books a gazillion times, I would have left the theater a major Team Jacob fan; they failed to convey the epic love between E & B. I felt like B and J had more chemistry in this movie--WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? I think it has something to do with whatever real life stuff is/was/ or is not going on between Robsten.

@Jelena: glad you saw it, but you most do a re-watching when it's quieter. You have to hear Edward moan in the kiss ;)

@NibbleitPattinsonakaNebilet: Hope your day ended on a better note than it begun.

  48. This is just about something that makes me sad... I've viewed NM several times now (OK, tons of times) and the reaction of the audience to the ending - the proposal oops sorry if it's a spoiler but I guess everyone knows everything by now - is rather negative. Some people found it cute and lovely but the vast majority were just pissed. I get the feeling most people did not understand it. But the worst - some people just laughed at it. They left the theater saying the end was ridiculous... And, yes, it makes me so sad, it should be such a beautiful and important moment and it seemed that it badly failed it purpose. My guess is that all the E/B scenes were too rushed (yes, I know this is mostly about Jake and Bella), but the film does not convey clearly enough the depth of the love between Edward and Bella, some realy crucial explanation scenes are definitely missing... so that in the end, no one understands the final proposal scene. And, believe me, I've been to a lot of NM viewings (no, I won't tell how many!)...Anybody agrees with me?

    ReplyDelete
  49. So I had to defend Rob's beautiful nipples from a friend who finally thought they had something against the hotness and I researched the 'nipplegate' (no I do not have a life outside of this!). It looks like in real life our Rob's nips are the same size/color. Something happened and I feel bad that it did with the CGI/make-up and lighting. If you look at the photos taken from that scene earlier this year, the man has very pretty lickable nipples.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Overall, I liked it, but it does have its problems. I'm with both of you on nearly everything.
Glad I'm not the only one who had trouble seeing where Edward was looking. Very annoying. And his make-up made him look so old! I could have done a better job, and I don't have very steady hands. Wigs sucked.

Alice's vision: WTF was that?! The cheesy slowmo (actually there was a bit too much slowmo through the whole movie), Bridesheadward, the dress, the sparkles...ugh. Everyone knows it shoulda been of Edward fucking Bella's brains out without worrying about shattering her pelvis. Now THAT'S a vision!

Liked the Volturi, loved Victoria and the humans. Even KStew wasn't too bad, but I think that's because the angst suited her. It's the only acting mode she has.

  51. Am I the only person that loved the contacts? I was soooo disappointed in their eyes in Twilight. The way they are in New Moon is exactly how I pictured them when reading the books; blood red eyes. Or golden, not golden-brown could-almost-be-human. Their eyes are supposed to alert people, Bella's "different" and is the only one to get close and notice the difference. Someone mentioned that they would never follow Heidi if her eyes looked like that, but I think that the books say something about her wearing contacts for her "fishing" expeditions. Anyhow, that's how I felt.

Just wanted to pop in to say I didn't hate anything, not even Alice's vision. I don't think they'll make BD, and if they do it will be an epic fail like Queen of the Damned after Interview with the Vampire. But I digress. I liked the vision cuz I see it as my ONE glimpse of Bella as a vampire.
That being said I did think that Jacob awkwardly trying to start a fight with Mike at the movies was stupid, beyond stupid and didn't need to be added to the plot at ALL.
I've seen it twice and I'm looking forward to seeing it soon with DH for my third viewing.
    XOXO

  55. Well well, the best review yet! exactly what I was thinking, though I didn't really notice the eye thing, but now I think about it, YEA!

And I was just saying to my twi mate today, while we was watching new moon "i'm not gonna look at the nipples, i'm gonne look as low as poss!" after all, if u use ur imagination, he could be naked! ;)

  56. Oh, and my male friend who was with us in the cinema today and was watching NM for the 1st time (he loved it btw) recons that the bella as a vamp running scene was stupid and why was Edward wearing golfing clothes! lol

  57. I cannot get over the fact that the wolf pack (in human form) weren't big enough! They should look freakishly big. Jacob was supposed to be 6'5". Then all needed to be taller. It bothers me. It bothers me a lot. I need to get over it.

I liked NM. I like it more each time I see it but I don't think I'll see it at the theater as much as I saw Twilight.

I'm counting down the seconds till Remember Me. A real sex scene! I can't wait.

  58. i totally agree with all of those points! i went to see the movie with my husband (who is team jacob, practically grounds for divorce) and my six week old baby, esme, and every teen girl in our town apparently. the whole time i was hoping no one would ask the baby's name as i figued they would think i was batshit crazy when they heard it is esme.

    Woo hooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Great review comments everybody!! I love hearing what all of you think because the family/friends I've been dragging to see it with me just don't want to talk about it afterwards. I need Twitards!!

  61. Thanks STY for a great review, as expected. Believe it or not, I didn't really notice the contacts in NM, nor did I even notice Rob's nips. I'm sure it'll be all I can see....except for the happy trail and those marvelously prominent pelvic bones My Precious has, of course, muahahahah! ;)

I love love love reading all of our Twi-comments! They are as much a part of this blog for me as JJ and STY's witty posts! Thanks to all of you for everything you think and are willing to share...and I too am curious how many times WhyIsTheRumAlwaysGone has seen NM. 64. Wow Ladies! I'm LOVING all of the comments on this and JJ's post. They're great!

I have to admit, though I was driven to distraction by the score, and have a few minor issues, overall:

I LOVED New Moon!!! It was so much more than I expected. For me, it was all about the feel and the cohesiveness with the books. CW nailed both for me. The other stuff is totally outshined, for me, by the improvements made to the franchise. Maybe by the time they do Breaking Dawn, they'll get it all right. :)

Of course, I've only seen it once and then got sick and couldn't go again. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I did think the vision was strange, but it was cool to see a vampy Bella.

@STY - I've noticed the wind chimes since Twilight, but learned to let it go.

@Everyone - Keep up the comments, you girls are making my day!

I agree with a lot of what you said, especially on Rob's lips. They are perfect and I hate the lipstick! I do like his hair a bit better in this one. I must confess that I like Alice's vision. I know this makes me a geek but I have come to embrace that side of myself :)

  68. Pretty much in agreeance - hated the contacts - liked the Twilight ones much better ( actually I think the precious looked much better all round in Twilight :( )

I thought the wigs were totally busted. Again.

Alices vision was pure cheese - they could have at least been running full speed...LMAO

I saw an interview with Chris Weitz the other day and he mentioned he thought there would be about THIRTY FREAKING MINUTES of outtakes on the DVD. Yeah. That bitch had better deliver.

OK, I give in. I've seen it, like, 10 times. I think. I should count again the tickets which I've hidden somewhere so no one will see them. But I've had the excuse of taking various underage nieces to see it. Of course, I took each niece separately. I'm so glad I have so many. I'm also the lucky owner of an annual card which entitles you to go to the movies as many times as you wish, every day (that's a good thing we have over here in France), so it costs me the same if I go only once or many times. Thanks God I always go to a huge multiplex and there's hundreds of people milling around there at all hours and the staff here are always changing, so I don't get recognized. Somebody help me...

  70. WIG! My sister and I had to say that out loud every time Rosalie came on screen. She didn't want to dye her hair? Um, bad decision. And Jasper - ugh! He takes the prize for worst hair. The ugliest wardrobe award goes to Alice. It looked like she was pregnant and trying to hide it.

That said, I loved how Billy Burke played Bella's Dad, and I thought Bella herself was just lovely. I also thought she did a great job playing "angsty" Bella.

In fact, I loved the whole movie, despite the bad wigs and wardrobe.

  71. I finally just saw the movie for the first time today (Dec. 1!!) and it was an epic fail for me. And I am a hardcore fan whose read the books a million and one times and have watched my Twilight DVD so much I wore it out. I agree with almost all the comments regarding wardrobe, makeup, and what was cut from the book, but what I really HATED was the musical score playing in the background. WTF?!?! Twilight was more edgy and young and was more fun to watch. Love Love Love the Twilight soundtrack! I will not buy this soundtrack as it plain sucks. Also I am a huge Edward fan but I walked out of the matinee showing feeling much more Team Jacob because the love story that the entire series is BASED on was really missingfor me. Would you really want to join the Cullens in immortality when they can't even throw a fun birthday party? What a tense group! They needed one smiley scene in there to show the love between Bella and Edward. Preferably a typical "night in her bedroom all lovey and cuddly" scene. And remember how Bella's lullaby in Twilight set the emotion for the tree scene so perfectly? Where was the emotion in New Moon? I actually CHECKED MY CELLPHONE at least 6 times to see when it would end!!! Jacob was awesome and Edward came across more trouble than he was worth. (But God is that man HAWT!!!!)She can't even really make out with him for God's sake! Bella go for the hot young buff guy whose half naked!!!

  72. I am a recent addition to the Twilight fandom. I picked up Twilight on November 16, and have since read the entire saga and Twilight, itself, around 10 times (if not more). I, too, am in my thirties, and am so happy to have found your site.

Anyway, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but one of the interesting things I noted the second time I watched New Moon (and was seemingly confirmed by the article interviewing the movie's costume designter) is that Edward is wearing the same suit from the break up scene, as he is in the Volturi and attempted suicide scene (sans jacket). I think it implies that he was so miserable (as he describes to Bella in the book) that he didn't even change clothes for months. The blue shirt is torn and almost threadbare in the scene where the Volturi deny his request. Anyway, I just thought that was an interesting and subtle way to convey Edward's side of things in the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  73. LOL you guys seem to always crack me up. The Aro version of the vision that Alice showed him worked for me. Because Alice in the future picks out Bella's wardrobe. The timing is sometime after Breaking dawn when her eyes changed. And most importantly Bella is giving Edward the look saying tear this dress off me hot stuff.

LOL Edward the former 100yr plus virgin is going to get as much as he can as often as he can. So yeah the scene worked for me.

  75. Having now seen the movie, twice ( a month after it opened).I can finally comment.

I agree with all you have written with the exception of the wolves close ups. When Sam enters as a wolf to protect Bella from Laurant, I found that muppet muzzle very disappointing. The wolves look much better from a distance. I even loved the way they moved.

The last half of the movie was rushed. I found the dialogue between E and B when she first saves him to be unrealistic. I think they would have fallen into each others arms at least and/or kissed...this "but you believed me so easily" silliness does not cut it with me.

A couple of times the wigs looked very false.

Aro came across as slightly gay, which I had not imagined when I read the book. Having seen his portrayal as a werewolf in Underworld, I expect something a bit more masculine. as he is one of my favorite actors.

Th rapid movement of the vampires was excellent and so was the sound effects that went along with it.. goodbye Edwards FF running up above the cloud cover of Twilight.

Victoria in the chase scene was excellent.

The soundtrack did not get it 100% right, as I think it did in Twilight. My fav was Bella in front of the window and Victorias chase scene.

    ReplyDelete
