When Was The Last Time You Read Twilight?

Are you there, Twilight? It's me, Snarky...

There's all sorts of stuff going on in the Twidom these days... Award shows! New photos! Magazine interviews! The New Moon dvd is coming out (and I need a new Twi-bff - again...)! Eclipse footage is just around the corner! Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and most of the other cast members have new movies coming out! It's all very exciting and frankly hard to keep up with, there's so much going on...

I've been in such a Twi-tizzy this last year that sometimes I lose sight of what started this whole obsession for most of us: the book. I mean, I watch the Twilight dvd a lot. Like a lot a lot. Visitors to my house have been known to ask me if I ever watch anything else. I probably pop it into the dvd player or the laptop once or twice a week. I don't always watch the whole thing, but it's like comfort food to me now (and less fattening). Sometimes I'll watch it until the part where the bad vamps come and break up the love-fest and then I'll turn it off, since that's kind of there the move takes a turn for the less-fun (I love the move "Blow" with Johnny Depp but only up until the part there everything starts to fall to shit. What can I say? I'm a fair-weather movie kinda gal).

So I have a question for you: When was the last time you read Twilight? Like actually read the book from cover to cover, not just meandered through your favorite passages while perched on the throne?

[oh btw JJ - when I've had a few cocktails sometimes I take pictures of your bathroom reading selections.]

I just recently picked it up and started rereading a week or so ago. I had been somewhere in the middle of Eclipse but had found myself skipping around and only reading certain passages (hellooooo leg hitch!). But Twilight has always been my favorite book in the series, so I started back at the beginning. Admittedly, it's not as potent at the first time - I can put it down for more than two seconds at a time, go to sleep at a semi-reasonable hour, feed myself and my loved ones (husband, cat), and otherwise function semi-normally (sort of - for me, anyway). Let's face it: I know how the series ends, so it's not like I'm racing to get there numerous re-reads later.

The First Time
[Yes we've posted this before but it's still funny! Click to enlarge!]

But rereading Twilight reminds me all over again why I fell down this Twitarded rabbit hole in the first place... I've got to be honest and say that at first I was surprised at how some of the text read like a bad Twilight parody, but one hundred pages in and I'm hooked all over again, in love with these two characters falling in love in the way that only a teen and a faux-teen-sparkly vampire can... I'm once again sucked into the way Stephenie Meyer's characters take us along for a ride back to that time when every word spoken would be analyzed and dreamed about, every encounter in the hallway left you breathless, and you would rather die than live without your beloved.

How many times have you read the series? I know that sometimes I pick up the book and I start reading and it's all I can do not to bang my head against the wall and set the damn thing on fire because, really, how many times can she describe Edward's marble-y perfection using the same three adjectives? Sister Snarky even offered to buy her a thesaurus at one point. Yet, there are other times I find myself completely enraptured in their love story alllll over again and the next thing I know there is a pot burning on the stove and Mr. Snarky is wondering how the hell I can get so...involved in a silly book. Again.

And again...

Will it ever get old? Methinks not.

So spill it in the comments - are you still rereading the books regularly? When WAS the last time you read Twilight? Does it still tug on your heartstrings or are you using your Twilight books as paperweights to hold down your printed-out smutty fanfic??? Twitarded minds want to know...

  1. This will sound odd, but I’ve only read the series once. Yep.. I admit it. Only once. Haven’t picked it up since. Why? Cause I’m too busy reading other books.

Twilight reignited my love for reading, and it will always be near and dear to my heart, but as a child learns to ride a bike with training wheels, eventually the training wheels come off, and there goes the child. That’s how I feel. There are just too many good series, and too many talented fanfic authors, that I can not fathom going back and rereading it, when I haven’t even read Catch in the Rye, or Pride and Prejudice, etc.. You catch my drift...

But I will always love Twilight, and maybe when my obsession for books, calms somewhat, I will be able to pick it back up and reread the first one, the one that stole my heart.

  2. Oh god. It's been since last April - JJ lured me into the world of fanfic and I haven't left.

Ironically I discovered the books about this time last year. I developed the flu shortly thereafter and I read twilight over and over and over again.

Fast forward to this year and I've got the flu again. I think it's a sign. I need to do some reading.

  3. Funny you should mention this. Today I said to myself, "Self, you should read Twilight again. Nothing new and exciting going on in the Twiworld and RPatz's shit slick BAFTA hair has made you depressed." I don't know why but whenever I feel disillusioned, reading Twilight always gets me hyped up again.

I've read the entire saga 4 times. The last time I read Twilight (my fav too) was before XMas. I got new books from Santa and they've been hogging my time lately.

I let my MIL borrow my copy of the Twilight movie. She's had it for two months. I feel like I'm missing a limb. Sometimes I can feel it tingle.

  4. I can't believe you take pictures of my bathroom. Weirdo.

Then again, it really seems almost fitting that I like to read Twilight on the throne, no?

  5. i think it was December..yes cause of break..but i have the urge to read it again.
whe i read the book its like see the movie for me..but better

  6. I last read twilight and New Moon (well the whole saga actually) just before NM came out in theatres! I've read the saga way to many times. I think around 10 and it never gets old. There are some parts I could live without but some parts I love and couldnt live without.

When you read the books you remember taht you actaully LIKE Bella and that she's not a bumbling idiot. I like KStew but she twitches a little too much for my taste. And you always remember the first time you read the saga, and how when you were finished you started it again the next day! I plan on starting again before Eclipse comes out. I can't stay away from the charecters for too long. You miss them. Unfortunatly im not a huge fanfic fan, I dont have the time if i want to sleep to read it :(

The books are still just as awesome as the first time, and everytime i think im kinda forgetting what its all about (my obsession that is) I pick them back up to remind myself.

  7. @ mmMoxie - are you in my mind too? I was just thinking I need to start the series again.

I last read Twilight right before the midnight showing of New Moon - where I made sure I read both books before going to the movies. I have read the whole series I think 4 times. I have a pile of other books to read but haven't touched them yet - I even bought a new book this weekend but who knows when I will actually read it - Fan Fiction is kind of at the top of the list every time.

  8. I've been listening to the Twilight Soundtrack all day. It's rare to have cold, overcast days in Phoenix and whenever we do, I'm compelled to listen to it.

  9. Octoberish..I read the whole set for the 5th time. Since then classes have been kicking my ass, also I started fanfic in Oct (and have read a shit-ton of that), and also trying to get thru the True Blood books. (Gee, I wonder why my grades are slipping?) I fully plan on reading them all when this semester is over (May), especially Eclipse..I may go reread Chapter 20 before then..I've been missing it..BIG time.

  10. Okay, first of all, Jenny Jerkface, you got kick ass bathroom floor. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Second of all, that comic was the best, and pretty much describes my experience with the books. haha.

Thirdly, I actually re-read Twilight about a month ago, and just finished Breaking Dawn about a week ago, and today, I finished reading the Midnight Sun draft. I have read all 4 books probably a dozen times now. I just love them. This past time I read them, I hadn't read them in 6 months, and after the break I was sucked into the story again.

  11. For a very long time, I would get to the end of Breaking Dawn and then immediately turn to page 1 of Twilight. I think I did this about 6 times total, and then I got the audiobooks. Dear Lord, those things pushed my enjoyment of the series to near fetish levels. I'd listen in the car, on my iPod, while knitting, and even set the sleep timer and listen while going to bed. I think I got through the series another 5 or so times this way, but then I was introduced to fanfic. . . (GAME OVER, TWILIGHT.) Specifically, Twilighted's iFic podcast, which is basically an audiobook version of their most popular fic. The first one is Die To Self, which is an alternative to Breaking Dawn. (I.E. No human/vamp babies, and no fade to black. YES PLEASE!) And down the rabbit hole I went. . . Funny enough, I started re-reading Twilight about 3 weeks ago, I needed to get back to the core of the series, and it's something fun to read while walking on the treadmill.

  12. I'm on the 4th go around. I'm up to 'Breaking Dawn' again. Although I admit since, besides the books I have the "audible kids" version and they are on my iPhone to listen too, I mostly just listen to them now. You know, while sweeping the floor and boring stuff like that. I use my actual "reading" time (which is rare) for fanfic and real books.

But in case you didn't notice, on my bedside, nightstand, Rob shrine, my beat up copy of Twilight (from Kroger) that usually stays out because I reread it constantly.

"New Moon" is soooo much better the 2nd time around.

STY. I'll be your new best friend. I need a Twi-bff anyway.

  13. The last time I read The Saga was a week before New Moon hit the theater. It was my 7th time through all four books.

I don't plan another read until June. Too much fan fic. Too many marathon running guides. I find that The Saga calls to me though. If I randomly hear Supermassive Whack-a-mole or if it is really foggy out I'm always compelled to read them.

  14. please disregard my "to, too" typos (and others) I've had some cocktails.

  15. I have the audiobooks and have been listening to them in my car 24/7 since August. It's like my comfort food, too. The only time I listen to the radio is if someone else is in the car with me or the roads are bad, forcing me to keep two hands on the wheel so I can't change CDs. I'm currently back to Breaking Dawn. I've lost track of how many "reads" it would make for me, including the original books.

What I have discovered, though, is that Eclipse is my favorite book of the series. There are so many special moments between Bella and Edward. I hope every single one of them is in the movie!

As I listen to Breaking Dawn again, I am reminded that we will get depressed, New Moon Edward back and the damn dog's point of view. Still pissed that SM didn't give us Edward's.

I do the same thing with Twilight, STY. Between my DVD player and my iPod Touch, I watch bits and pieces of at least twice a week.

  16. Last time I read Twilight was before New Moon came out. And this is weird (cause I was reading some of the above comments that said the same) because I was thinking just the other day that I haven't read Twilight in forever and I need to. I miss it. In fact, I hadn't even watched Twilight since New Moon came out either then I popped it in last night and it was like greeting a lost lover. I love these books, they make me happy and relaxed- which IMO is what a good book does.

  17. last time i read the whole series was last year around october...and of course everyone was asking me why i was reading it again! but of course you dont understand until youve read it right?
i still pick up the books from time to time and i still get into it but not like the first time...that was...intense!
i was one of those people that had to watch the movie first after watching it i wanted more! and here i am now a twihard twitard or whatever they call us now at days:)

  18. I read the saga for about 14 months straight. I maybe read three new books in between, but dindnt have the heart to start anew relationship. Why fix it if it ain't broke? I was finally able to break away from back to back re-reDs because of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The next best thing to Twilight, but with more books! Twilight will always be my first love though.

  19. I have the movie in my DVD player and fall asleep with it every night. I read all the books twice, including the partial "Midnight Sun" online. Wait, may be 3 times for Eclipse, I'm not sure! I quit using the books as paperweights for my smutty fanfic because I'm afraid that my kids might find it!

  20. Right before New Moon came out in theatres. I figured I better re-read the book so I could be sufficiently pissy if the movie strayed too far.

But if I was going to read New Moon, then I needed to start with Twilight right? So I read it, NM and Eclipse (ya know, so I'd be sufficiently pissy if the leaks strayed too far from the book...)

  21. Actually, I just finished it last week. It still sucks me in, even after 5-6 (?) times reading it. I was amazed at the amount of ust in it! I went through with a pen and underlined the text where Edward toches Bella, or breathes her in, or kisses her. All this was severely lacking in movie... sigh. I'd like to go through and count the time his nose runs up her throat. (gulp) I fell in love with the pages all over again and am debating reading New Moon again... kind-of want to skip it and get to Eclipe, which is my favorite... at least it was. I 'll have to see because Twilight was just... wow. In all I've read series through a total of 4 times. But I've only read Breaking Dawn all the way through once. I tried to start a new book- Dear John, and I can't get past the first chapter. I don't know.. I think I'll leave it and move on to Eclipse. :)

  22. @Anon 11:36, in the beginning I was totally guilty of the same thing, only I fell asleep every night to the dvd commentary lol.

@STY, such perfect timing! I've just started rereading the Saga making this my second time around from cover to cover since my first time last March. Or technically, I'm listening to it on audio this time since commuting with that book is not handy. I have a really good memory and I've never been someone who can reread books because they just stay fresh. I think I've waited long enough because there's so much detail I didn't remember. And I think it's more entertaining this time around because I "know" who plays who in the movies. I laughed out loud when Jacob was talking about "freaky Virgos". I just got done listening to Temper in Eclipse. Goodness that was a good chapter.

I still would say Twilight is my favorite of the four, but I have to agree with Lisa, it's really weird but reading it a second time I kind of love Eclipse now too. Definitely more than I thought the first time around. So excited for the movie!

  23. I've read Twilight books 3 times (on audiobook... that counts as reading, right?) I finished up last fall. I have the books and had good intentions of actually reading them, but then I discovered fanfic and haven't gotten around to it yet. Actually, I haven't got around to much of anything of late. I have full intentions to read through Eclipse by the time the movie comes out.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've read the saga quite a few times. Er, maybe more than a few. Possibly double digits. I'd never heard of fanfic until Twitarded & your first fic rec post was a good 6 months after I discovered Twilight. I actually started reading Twilight again several weeks ago. I only read a few pages here & there. It makes me feel all sweet & innocent again.

  25. I have lost track of how many times I have read the series--maybe 6 of 7. Most of my re-reading was done on throne too JJ...it is the only room with a lock on it in our house. The series stays next to my bed at all times....you know just in case I need a fix. At this point though fanfic has taken over. I will re-read Eclipse before the movie or maybe I won't...who knows. All I know is I want more Hockeyward and I want him NOW!

@STY Once again you are in my head. I was just thinking today that if it weren't for fanfic I would probably still be
stuck in the rut of re-reading the series. It is creepy how you sneak into my mind.

  26. So...I have prob read the Saga: Twilight to Breaking Dawn, all the way thru 4 times. But I have grabbed various books, read 1 and then not the others and vice versa 8 or 9 times. Granted I only read it for the first time early this last August.

@STY As for Twilight, I just picked it up again about a month ago, and was reading it a couple nights a week up until the bad Vampires made their appearance, I have to put it down there because it just gets annoying. In fact, a friend wanted to borrow it right about then...so it was perfect timing. I am no longer loaning out my hard back copy, only the paperback.

Speaking of Eclise, I'm tempted to pick up New Moon and read the last 2 chapters, then move onto Eclipse again. My favorite book. <3

    Ahhhh...might do it tonight!!!

  27. I have jury duty tomorrow and I'm bringing Twilight with me! At first it was in hope that they will see a 38 year old woman reading it and decide I am mentally deranged and not pick me (which is seriously close to the truth.) Now I just want the comfort it brings.

  28. Weird, I was JUST talking to my friend today about reading Twilight for a second time. Yep, I'm a one time reader so far too. Over x-mas break I saw my mom's Twilight books staring at me from the coffee table and they were calling my name - but I didn't dive in.

I've had such a hard time finding any books since Twilight that I've not been able to put down. With Twilight, the books were an extension of my arm for 4 weeks. I got tons of people at work reading the books because everyone was so curious about these mysterious black books I had my nose buried in.

Embrassing truth: I've only finsihed TWO books since finishing Breaking Dawn last May!! I've started FOUR that I haven't been able to finish. So essentially, Twilight ruined me on future books.

I'm heading to Cabo in a week and a half and I'm thinking I might just bring Twilight! After all, I know it's a sure thang!

  29. I have read the entire series 4 1/2 times - right before New Moon came out (the movie), I reread Twilight and New Moon, so that was the last time. The first three times were within one month of reading the books for the first time (I went through forwards than backwards, then forwards again). Then more slowly last winter for time #4.

The books live in my bedside cubby. (Yes, I have a fucking cubby.)

I've been thinking about rereading before Eclipse and definitely before the trip to FOOOOORRRRKKSS - I heard there might be a trivia challenge, and I love to win!

  32. I just finished a full read of Twilight 3 days ago, for probably the 5th or 6th time (this is since November of last year, people I think I have a problem). I love it.

I just finished a full read of New Moon tonight - it may have been the 3rd time. New Moon doesn't do for me what Twilight does. I think it is because Jacob just annoys me once he gets all wolfey.

I love the story, especially the beginning where everything is so innocent. Not that I mind a good dose of FanFic smut, mind you, but I really, really love Twilight.

My hubby asked me tonight how many times I was going to read the books. Who knows. I have never read another book more than once, and I am not tired of Twilight at all, which would have me concerned about my sanity, or lack thereof, if reading it didn't make me feel so good.

What I really, really, really, really want, is Midnight Sun. I read the 264 pages of that, and I think about cursing SM every time I finish it, but then I worry if I do curse her, she won't finish it. I WANT Midnight Sun....

  33. I'm constantly listening to the audiobooks whenever I have time - Well not at home when hubs is around, poor guy has enough to suffer from all the things Twilight.
Oh and when I don't hear the audiobooks I'm listening to the soundtracks.. Good that there are 4 of them always fitting my mood ;)

I read the entire series about 5-7 times, I stopped counting.

At the moment I'm again with Twilight and I can't help it but smile when I hear sweet scenes and it reminds me why we are all here!!
Which was not Rob to be honest it was Edward and this wonderful books!

Uhmm I don't mind having Rob now in my life too, but all I was saying he's not the reason why I'm here, it was an unbelievable love for some books....

  34. I first read the books in late April last year in a week and half (Eclipse in one day and is my favourite).

This past summer, I got a job! Yay me! Said job put me on strike after 2 days..FML. What now? How to make 4 hours walking in little circles, fending off angry Torontonians go faster? I noticed a girl reading New Moon in the picket line and I thought, "Why not?"

Well, I just whipped through them all from Twilight to Eclipse in record time again...Breaking Dawn was a harder slog this time. NOT my favourite of the 4 books.

I really devoured New Moon the second time around seeing as all the footage and pictures had been spilling on TV and the internet for the past 6 weeks. I devoured it so much, the spine broke and some pages started to fall out (it was my only soft cover). I've since replaced it with a hard cover!

What can I say? Long before I discovered Rob, Edward had me eating out of his cold, marble-like hand. He provides Bella with what we all want...unconditional, undying love and devotion.

In short, Bella and Edward made me believe in love again and I can't get enough of them!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I read through the whole series again before New Moon was released. As it was only my second time through all of the books, I had forgotten a lot of it. Great fun to fall in love with the ole gang again!

I have also been a very naughty girl and borrowed all of the audio books from the library, and than uploaded them to my iTunes. So I can now have my audio Twi-fix any time I damn well please! HA!!

  36. I started rereading the series about a month and a half ago. I am now on Breaking Dawn trying to make myself get through it. I've been really facinated with fanfic lately, so I find it more in tune with my current state of mind. I kind of got bored with Twilight as it was. I was ready for an Edward & Bella twist, so I've become semi-addicted to fanfic. So much so, that I have like 50 stories saved in my favorites under Twilighted that I am wanting to eventually all read.

I do agree with the lady above, I think it was KittyCait, that said when you read Twilight again, it reminds you how the first time you read through it, you immediately reread it again. I so did that. I've read the entire series now about 5 or 6 times, but since Twilight is my favorite, I've probably read it about 8 times.

There's just something about this series that makes you fall in love with it all over again every time you pick it up and fall in love with E & B all over again too.

  40. I have no idea how many times I've read through the whole lot, I did it on rotation for a few months, then I started dipping in and out but recently started New Moon at the beginning and have nearly finished. I read fanfic at the computer, but always have a book on the go for toilet times and getting the kids to sleep (I used to think lying with them while they fell asleep was a bad habit to get into, but now I read at the same time it's one of my fave times of day!). And I still can't help going more wolf everytime I read them *sigh*. Sorry!

  41. I think it was December. Twilight only. After watching the movie. AGAIN.

I wanted to compare it to the movie - which I've watched more than I've read the book (sorry STY, but I LOVE the movie, twitchy Bella and all). I know the script so well it was fascinating to see how MR pulled out the key parts, rearranged and changed a few things and made a stronger product. On the whole. I'd forgotten how kissy face Ed/Bella were in the book, which was missing in the movie.

I've done the whole thing... 3 times? Twi and New Moon (well, the Edward parts)one more on top of that. This has to do with the missing copies (hardcovers!) of Eclipse and BD which I STILL swear my daughter lost/misplaced/left in Alaska. I had to borrow them to read the last time.

Twilight I love the best cause it was first.
    Eclipse is my second fav.
New Moon 3rd. (The Edward parts)
BD is in a category all by itself. ;)

  42. Ok, so when I first read the title of this post, I thought, that's it, it's official, JJ & STY are literally IN MY MIND...then I scrolled down a bit and saw a copy of Twilight sitting next to the throne and thought--holy shit, maybe one of them is in my house! (then I realised I don't have that awesome tiling pattern in our toilet, so sighed in a mixture of relief and envy--love the tiles JJ!)

After reading the comments though, I'm firmly of the mind that we Twitards are one and the same. I literally JUST picked up Twilight to read it again (unfortunately it' smy mum's copy as mine got mistakenly packed away when we put all our stuff in storage to come live with my parents--I'm not sure which is more depressing, living with the folks, or no Twilight saga...)

So I'm just at the the meadow scene...and as I re-reread this book, I'm still saddened by how much got missed out of the movie. Don't get me wrong, I LUUUUUUURVE the movie, but let's face it, Catherine Hardwicke REALLY did much more of an interpretation than an actual transformation from book to film. (unlike Chris Weitz who kinda freaked me out with how close to the book he made NM...it was the first movie I'd watched in a theater in 2 years--I have a 2 year old--and I felt like I'd lost my mind and my imagination was literally coming to life...if only Edward had been there in real life too *sigh*

To answer the post's formal question, I've only read the entire series from book 1-4 in order, once, but I've re-read parts about a gazillion times -fan fiction has taken over since the first read (I blame Twitarded for getting me started!) but I've read all the books on their own 4-5 times, New Moon only a couple, the most recent slog was just prior to the movie coming out. I still can't read the breakup scene without getting short of breath, and then I just have to read the scene where they find each other again before I can read the whole Jacob saga...
and BD the same, but minus the doggy tales in the middle...I agree with the above comment, damn you SM for not giving us an Edward POV!!!

My husband tells me that I'm able to link Twilight and Twi-related Fan fic (is there any other kind?!) to almost any situation...I now feel that this is a challenge he has extended to me!

SO...given all the above comments about the movie vs the books etc etc., you guys should do a scene by scene blog about the movie (vs the book if you like or just the movie) so it's like we're there with you as you watch it--now THAT would be entertaining...and I do mean scene by scene, NOT shot by shot (though I'm sure we would all have opinions gah-LORE on a few close ups, twitches, jawporn and lipstick usage!)
We Twitard minions (let's face it ladies, you are our leaders, we follow you blindly :)) could all comment, add our takes etc! let's see who noticed the random things like the wings behind Rob in the science lab; who thinks Kristen's dream-time weirdo hand twitchy thing she does (is she pushing something or just trying to 'raise da roof') just before she wakes to find Edward in her room; who realised the 'inside joke' that Rob...i mean Edward laughs at when Bella says she hates all 'cold wet things'...(Rob didn't think anyone got that according to his comments in the dvd extras). ETCETERA!!!
there's a whole world of snarky, jerky, twitardy commentary to be done!

Thanks again for the huge laughs ladies, we Australians are sadly lacking in exciting Twilight related news (like the Remember me premier-Eclipse trailer event of the year...damned Australian lack of hype) PLUS it's 34 degrees here in Perth, not a lovely mushy green covered 6 degrees that Forks has today (thank you widget!)

  43. oh! PS! I read on a volvo website the other day that Edwards volvo in NM IS actually Silver! according to volvo.com "Edward's XC60 features a Saville Grey metallic exterior"
..it's on a site talking about the 2 ladies who won the 'what drives Edward' comp where you could win a volvo like he has in the movie...so there ya go...one less reason to smack Chris Weitz/Scummit when we see him..

PPS...wow...my first comment was really long...sorry about that, I get a bit verbal diahorrea-ey when I talk about Twilight, no Twi-BFF to get it out of my system with... *sad face*

  44. The Twilight series has spoiled reading for me as I just cannot seem to get into it with the same gusto that I read Twilight with!

I have read it 3 times and Midnight Sun once (shocking, I know)!

My SIL borrowed the series (for the 2nd time) and I have been nagging my husband for about two weeks noew to get it back from her because I need to read it AGAIN! But the iPod idea is brilliant and I will be looking for the audios today! Luckily have have a shit memory so I enjoy it EVERY single time!

I have watched Twilight maaaaany times and have been getting withdrawl symptoms lately (also nagging DH to watch it with me again)! Last night he said we could but never got around to it!
Cannot wait to get NM on DVD!

You twats have awakened the Twi-monster in me again (not that it was fast asleep to start with) and I am annoying the crap out of everyone again!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't remember when I read Twilight last but I read New Moon right before the movie came out...literally I was sitting in line for New Moon as I was finishing it up. I think I have read the series 3 or 4 times through I can't remember anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  46. O yes....never read fanfic before.....time to start! ((wonders if it is unethical to print fanfic at work))

    ReplyDelete
  47. I only read the saga once, but I do plan on rereading it. The only book I ever reread was Neverending story.

NM is my favourite book, and Eclipse, for some reason, is least favourite. I think it's because in Eclipse we're not sure whether Bella will choose Jacob or Edward, and the Jacob in the books annoyed the shit out of me.

Yes, I agree with whoever said that you've got awesome bathroom floor JJ.

    ReplyDelete
  48. i last read twilight back in jan but never finished it cuz that's when i started reading fanfic (one of JJ's recs). best thing ever! now there's so many that i want to read i dont know when i'll have time to read the series again. i do want to try to read eclipse before the movie comes out.
lol i agree about when you reread twilight......i HATE when she says "angel's face" wtf???? how can you not laugh or cringe at that

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have read the series about three times fully, but have read the books individually at times. I find it really hard to get through Breaking Dawn - and i don't know if its because i know whats coming or if its because the book itself really annoys me.... My faves are definitely Twilight and Eclipse. Fanfic has totally taken over my reading now though, I devour it! Think I am addicted! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  50. I am always reading a Twilight book or a Harry Potter (yes...I am one of those people). I can't read them as fast as I'd like due to reading I have for my classes... I keep a book on me at all times, in my purse or car, just in case I need to leave reality.

I enjoy re-reading the series because I think that so much can be lost when you power through them in you addictive need to insert Edward in your brain! I am also known to hi-lite my book and keep a journal about my thoughts and ponderings. What I would give to sit down with SM over some cupcakes and ask her all my wacky questions!?!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I re-read them, and have decided this will be a trend, a month or so before the movie which will take me longer whenever BD comes out. I reread them again a couple months ago because for some reason I glazed over the line between Eclipse and Breaking Dawn- how is that so? I don't know. I have also found myself reading the omitted portions SM posts on her sight and WISHING she would have finished Midnight Sun, my first foray into the Twilight books.

I don't think Twilight will ever get old, not as long as it speaks to those young at heart.

*P.s. I used a label maker to paste over some sections including words I preferred just to mix it up- the redundant words like perfect/chiseled/smooth/crooked/marble etc...

  52. Last April I purchased the entire Twilight Saga at Costco. I read and reread and reread the series over and over again. I could not get enough of Edward and Bella. It was my fictional escape world. I love how devoted Edward is to Bella. I love the romance, the first love. It brought back great memories of my first love. Since then, I slowly weaned myself off regular readings of Twilight, reading the series before New Moon and I probably will reread before Eclipse. I have since discovered the wonderful worlds of Fan fiction and believe it or not, young adult fiction. Beautiful Creatures, The Hunger Games, The Immortal Instruments, the Uglies, Vampire Academy. I also discovered Kelley Armstrong, who writes great books about werewolves.
I think what Stephenie Meyer did to me was that she rekindled my love of reading.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think I picked the 1st book again last November... and I was fascinated, again (despite some really bad writing). The Twilight DVD sits almost permanently in my player and I sneak peeks at my favorite parts when nobody sees me. But I only re-read parts of NM and Eclipse (yes, the leg hitch). I hated so much BD that I almost did not finish it and I now definitely use it to weigh down some pile of old stuff which I plan to sort through some day. Rereading the 1st book definitely made me regret that so much was cut out in the film though, there's so many scenes I would have loved to see. But generally speaking I have moved on and have started reading "grown-up" books again... Yes Catcher in the Rye included and I loved it!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Read the series 3 times, then found fanfic.....can't stop won't stop! I plan on reading Eclipse once again closer to June though.
Just found out I am pregnant (1st time) and I should totally be reading some baby books or some shit....but like I said, can't stop..won't stop with the fanfic...gahhh!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was a late cummer to the Twi-saga and didn't pick up Twilight for the virgin read till almost a year after the movie came out. I picked it up last summer and my experience was just like everyone else's -- I read the book in a day and ran to the library (LOL, yes!) and checked out NM and Eclipse, but had to break down and buy BD. I read the whole series in about 6 days. As soon as I finished BD, I picked up Twilight again and proceeded to repeat reading ALL 4 BOOKS completely for about the next 3 months. I honestly have no idea how many times I've read them cover to cover, maybe 15? Maybe 20? This was before I was "inducted" into the world of FF. ;) Since then my original Twi reading has taken quite the hit. I think I read Twilight last about a month ago.

But fear not -- I'm just as much a sick, obsessed puppy as the rest of y'all, and I certainly deserve to be here (tho I don't know if I'd take pics of JJ's bathroom. Hey, at least the floor was clean....)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I read the series for the third time through this past summer. It was my beach reading. It's amazing what these books do to people. I think I was into either New Moon or Eclipse when a woman approached me on the beach telling me she's reading them too and how much she looooooooves them. She wasn't shocked to find out it was my third time through. Anyone who hasn't read the books can't understand the pull they have on us. So frankly, I think all those nay sayers should just shut the fuck up and leave us to our *sigh* books!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Same for me, Twilight is my favorite book of the series. Their new love does me in every time. And same on the movie...I watch it a lot but usually fast forward through parts or skip the middle to the prom scene. I'm reading Water for Elephants right now, but when I'm done I may have another go round with Twilight. Le sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Firstly:

@TexasKatherine it will take more than the reading of Twilight to make you sweet and innocent again..love oink x

Secondly, it has been a few months since I have read Twilight. I put an embargo on all of the books to encourage me to read other books. I ended up moving onto the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series instead, vamps who actually have sex - yippeeee!!!! And of course Fan Fiction for some more hard core action.

I will know doubt return to my first true love in the next few months, just to refresh my memory of course ; )

  59. I've read the entire series 4 times. After the last run through I decided I needed to feed my brain something else, and since I've read about 3 other books and I'm dying to get through this last one because I've been itching to re-read Twilight, and I know what will happen...then New Moon, then Eclipse and well let's just say the 5th time around isn't so far off. :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have read Twilight and Eclipse more times than I can count. New Moon three times and Breaking Dawn...only once. Hated that shit. Anyway..I digress.

I don't think they will ever get old b/c I get something new out of the books each time I read them.

It will never be the same as the first time...but still totally worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I have only read the saga once from cover to cover. And I JUST read them for the firt time this January. Late to the party.
But I have dog-eared many pages in each book so I can go back to my happy place. I also read the beginning and ending of each book from time to time.
Twilight is my fav as well. It's all about the relationship between Bella and Edward for moi.
Thanks to Stephanie for giving this stay at home mom a great pleasure read. Stuck at home in the winter in MI. She really made me want to read for enjoyment again, now that my son is sleeping through the night. I'm forever grateful to her for getting the blood in my veins pumping again, especially in the bedroom.
She really woke our hearts up didn't she? We are all a bunch of romantics. With a splash of perv.

  62. I'm on page 142 for the seventh time! Such a yummy series. The books are so wonderful... and with the characters from the movies I can imagine (let my imagination run riot) much more readily ;)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've read the whole series five or six times, I'm not sure which. The last time was just a couple of weeks ago (but I didn't bother with BD this time). I actually broke off in the middle of the new Terry Pratchett I was reading because I had an itch that only Twilight could scratch. And being a huge nerd I love love LOVE Terry Pratchett. Twilight has ruined me for other books for life.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think she actually did have a thesaurus and she over used it in the first book. I found myself trying to ignore the clang of misused $10 words during a lot of Twilight (verbose? *clang*...doesn't she mean loquacious?). Either she cut that out after or I got so caught up in the story I stopped noticing it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I started reading Twilight Aug 2009. Read the whole series pretty quick. Saw the movie 15 times in the theater and countless times at home. I have read the books too many times to mention. Have about 10 pages left in Eclipse and then will start over at Twilight because I am not a big fan of Breaking Dawn. Help me I can't stop! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've re-read the series 2 more times I first read it and the last time was right before NM came out to the theaters. I just got a shiny new copy of Twilight (because someone didn't give me my other one back - NEVER LOAN IT OUT!!!!!!) and will be reading it yet again after I'm done with the plethora of dirty dirty fan fic I've been reading

    ReplyDelete
  67. when i first read the series i borrowed the books from a friend. therefore, i read them through multiple times knowing that i would have to part with them eventually.

since then, the movies happened, the blogs happened, and the fanfic happened.

just last week i decided that i couldn't take it anymore and went to buy the books. since it had been almost a year since i'd read them, i thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the world again.

i like doing that. with hp also. i almost punish myself by not reading them for months and months because i know when i do pick them up again, i will appreciate them all the more.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Believe it or not... I haven't actually "read" Twilight! I checked it out on audio book from the library and listened to it on my commute. Twice. Then I checked out New Moon, decided audio was too slow, and ended up buying all the books except for Twilight. I've been meaning to buy a copy... but I'm sort of saving the "reading" of Twilight experience. I know once I buy the book... game over.

    ReplyDelete
  69. How funny you should ask this! I just finished it again last night. I hadn't read any of them in forever, since discovering fanfiction at least. But I am kinda out of fresh FF stories and am caught up on all my updates, so I figured what the hell.

So here is a question....is there any chapter that you kinda rush through when re-reading Twilight?

I find myself annoyed at the La Push trip (I think the chapter is called Scary Stories???) and rushing through most of that.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I reread Twi and NM just before the movie came out, but skipped over a lot of blah. I could only handle so much dark and gloomy Bella before my angst-o-meter started humping the "warning" line.

And it's getting increasingly difficult to read the damn books when certain ff VAMP Edwards pop into my brain...How can you possibly pick up Eclipse or BD without hoping to seeing Edward Letting Go or Blood & Lust (just to name a couple)?!

    ReplyDelete
  71. @fanficzombie - I always rush through that chapter too!!! It's the same way I skim through the "Legends" chapter in Eclipse. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Just reread Twilight completely about a month ago. And yes, I loved it all over again. Too bad the other books, especially Breaking Dawn, were so much less fun to read. I can never get into the other 3 as much as I LOVE Twilght.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yep, that cartoon pretty much sums it up! I reread Eclipse and Breaking Dawn about a month ago...for the 2nd time. Still with the same addiction!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I read the series for the last time on October, just before New Moon came out. I am sad to say that I think I have gotten to the point of overload and it's only the movies, RPattz and Twitarded that have kept my love for it alive.

I don't think I am completely cured from being a rabid fan of the books but I think of them now with the fondness of post break-up friendship. Something like: yes, I still love you but I am not IN love with you.

Yet again, who knows. Maybe for the release of Eclipse maybe my Twi-love will be rekindled.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I've read the whole series thru three total times. The last time was right before New Moon came out. I can't ever just read passages. And I can't ever just read "Twilight" by itself (I tried, and that's why I've read the series three times). I plan on reading them again before Eclipse comes out. The books never get old. Never.

    ReplyDelete
  76. twilight: um, at least 6 times- probably more. It’s my favorite book of the series. I like finding ‘new’ things each time I read it.
whole series: oh boy- at least 6 times. as soon as breaking dawn ends i pick up twilight next day. it’s likely I’ll reread up to eclipse prior to seeing the movie this summer.
fanfic: it rules me these days- makes me stay up late & neglect the husband (except when I want to reenact a scene) & the 5 yr old knows where to find mommy w/ her laptop.
dvd: the dvd commentary makes me laugh-out loud. And I was obsessed with it – not I just use ‘on demand’ if I can’t fall asleep.

AUDIO BOOKS: i ‘heard’ that the audio versions sucked. is this not the truth?

    ReplyDelete
  77. I read the Twilight series for the first time in September 2009 and have read it a total of 3 times since then. I have also read Midnight Sun twice.

I am currently obsessed with Twitarded Fanfic recommendations. But I am going to read the series again before Eclipse comes out.

I still watch Twilight about once a week too!!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Read all the books so many times lost count. HAVEN'T read them since September 2009 when I got soooo far into twi smut fanfic that the books are 'too tame'. I am getting a itch to read again and I too skip parts but I think I am going to start with book 1 and read. The sad part is that fanfic has ruined me and chaste E&B just don't get it for me anymore!
    I can't stop picturing E&J slash !!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I've read the actual books about three times. I have the audio books loaded on my ipod and listen to them all the time. Great way to tune out all the noise when you work in cubicle hell! Then home time is spent reading fan fic and that rabbit hole has swallowed me whole!

    ReplyDelete
  80. @Jayla
I have the audiobooks and they're pretty good. I listen to them at work a lot. You can download a free excerpt of chapter 1 of Twilight from Itunes to see if you like it.

My only gripe is that they're kind of wonky when it comes to rewinding/fast forwarding. Sometimes if I start an audiobook in the middle it will play for a few minutes and then boot me out, starting the track over at the beginning. I complained to Itunes, but they never got back to me. I've bought several other Itunes audiobooks and never had this problem before.

I'm a slave to Twitardia though, so I still listen and still cuss and fast forward when my track gets messed up.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Jayla, I *THANKFULLY* sampled the Audio version which I assume many have and I cannot imagine (I would love the capitalize all of this) what 5 or more hours of that would do to my synapses. It sounded horrid and I happen to be an audio book fan at times. I would skip it or sample it first if you plan to buy. Nothing beats reading it with your own voice.

    ReplyDelete
  82. im in the middle of reading the series again, this is probably my 4th time throught, whenever i dont have a new book to keep me busy that what i pull out, and when i read it i have to read them in order i cant skip around, what can i say im totaly hooked!

    ReplyDelete
  83. @jayla - The audio books aren't great. I don't like the woman who reads them. She does have a 'girlish' voice, which is appropriate, but she always sounds a bit petulant. I've listened to much better. And then they throw Jacob's voice in the mix, and it's really weird. Of course, it's a bit weird in the books too.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have read them all back to back all the way through 2 times, but I always have one on rotation in my bathroom (that pic cracked me up). I am currently reading New Moon in the potty kind of comparing/contrasting to the movie. Eclipse is my favorite, then Twilight, so I have read them the most. I haven't broken the spines yet though, so I consider myself ok (I'm not addicted...REALLY...right?)
I have JUST really gotten drawn into fanfiction though & that is currently what is owning me. That and the JR Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood series. If it's not Twilight or Vampire related, I haven't been able to get into it since Twilight. It has ruined me for other books - for now anyway.
SO...I am currently reading New Moon in the potty, Lover Revealed by JR Ward, and Realize (a Twilight fanfic) - all at the same time...sigh...I love it all so.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Jayla - The people on the audio books (it's mostly a woman, but they do use a man when it changes to Jacob's POV - which sucks in the real books and on the audio books btw) do a decent job. Audio books are always a little odd because the people have to change the tone of their voices for different characters, sometimes with a comical result. But I love getting into my car or on my iPod Touch when we're traveling and being immersed in that world. I have a 40-minute drive to and from work each day, and it really helps pass the time. FYI - I got my download on eBay for next to nothing so it was a very inexpensive test for me and I love it.

I thought it was funny that Jacob's voice is so deep and grown up. Especially after the Bella version of Jacob is so boyish and husky. Weird combination... Especially after it switches over to Bella's point of view again and Jacob goes back to the boy voice.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @Sonja - The first time I heard the guy do Jacob's voice was so freaking weird, especially after getting used to her voice doing it. But now I've listened to it enough that I'm used to it. What still creeps me out, though, is when the guy does Claire's voice, the toddler Quil imprinted on. Ewwwww!

    ReplyDelete
  89. @17foreverlisa - seriously, how many takes do you think that guy had to do?

I guess I'm just used to the awesomeness of Barbara Rosenblat. She does the Elizabeth Peters books about Amelia Peabody (no vampires, but totally awesome). Her male voices are incredible.

I also like the route that Phillip Pullman went with his audiobooks. He narrated, but there was a full cast to do dialogue.

    ReplyDelete
  90. OK that might be a total deal-breaker for me on the audio books! I have a hard time with the Claire voice when I hear it in my own head - not sure I could cope with a guy doing that baby-talk voice - yuck! lol...

    : )

    ReplyDelete
  91. @Sonja - I know! How did he keep a straight face doing that one?

@STY - NO!!! Just skip that part. I do now.

  93. @STY (zomfg! I'm talking to THE STY!!!)

I agree with 17ForeverLisa - you should give them a try! It's another way to get your Twi-fix hands free and on the sly. "What am I listening too? Uhhh...Chopin...Yeah. Chopin..."

The goofy voices are actually part of the so bad it's good appeal that Twilight has for me. Just like the Twilight movie wouldn't be the same with Lady Blinks-a-Lot and awful makeup, the audiobooks wouldn't have that certain je ne huh? quoi? without the imperfect reading.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I read it a couple of months ago... November I believe. I was going to read New Moon next but I think I'll jump straight to Eclipse. Jacob annoys the living crap out of me and I hate Bella in Eclipse! She's so oblivious and spoiled when it comes to Edward yet she lets Jacob do and say whatever he pleases. It pisses me off through out the entire book... yet it's my favorite. Go figure. Maybe I will re read Twilight and do it properly, in order. It's about respectng the story.

    ReplyDelete
  95. OK Ok I will give them a try! I am a fan of "so bad it's good" - how could I be here and love ALL of twilight and not feel that way - lol?!

@Kerri - totally agree with Bella in Eclipse - she was so frustrating and ungrateful for all she had! Loved it anyway, but not my fave, obvs...

    : )

    ReplyDelete
  96. I have read the series a few times, but not recently because fanfiction has kind of ruined it for me. After reading well written fanfic it's hard to go back- it's like, where are the lemons?? lol...i'm sure i will re-read them again someday though :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. OME, I just read through all the comments, and I love how many went straight to the BDB after Twilight - I did the same thing, on recommendation from my librarian! She was like, "If you liked that..." Hilarious.

    OK, back to my fanfic...

    ReplyDelete
  98. Last time for me was right before New Moon, couldn't possibly go without having a fresh run through!
I'll read the series again before Eclipse, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time before March 20th :(
I'll just have to make myself feel better with slow-mo run throughs of the wolf pack - YUMMY

    ReplyDelete
  99. The last time I read Twilight from straight thru from cover to cover was last September, but in total I think I've read the series about 6 times. Not real sure, cuz when I first got into them I couldn't put them down, even after I finished BD, so I just kept re-reading them in a vicious cycle that lasted a few months (of course, sometimes I'd skip around to my favorite parts, but I got thru the whole series at least 5 or 6 times last spring). Honestly, though, I don't know if I would have been that crazy about them if I had started them at a different time - that was just an insanely crazy-busy and stressful time in my life and I really needed something to take me away from it all when I discovered the books. I'm glad I found them, I'm just not sure I would have been as bat-shit about them if I had started them last summer or something. Anyway, I'm thinking of picking up Eclipse soon and starting on it in preparation for the movie, but I'm trying to wait til closer to June so I'm not so desparate like with NM - not having much luck, tho.

  100. Great post, STY. I'm loving everyone's comments!

I only fell down the rabbit hole a couple months ago. Breaking Dawn left me so sad and unfulfilled-- I didn't now how to deal or if I would ever recover. Thank goodness for fanfic, my next discovery! I'm thinking it will be awhile before I can read the whole series again.

Though I have been wanting to do the Twilight/Midnight Sun side-by-side read...

    ReplyDelete
  101. Sadly, my books have become decoration, paperweights, floatsm in the life I am attempting to reclaim since falling down the twihole. They sit on my nightstand, always close but rarely touched. I pick up eclipse every now and then, read the first few pages and feel guily for all of the time my children have lost to Edward. But not really. I watch the movie most days, have a bootleg new moon on my phone that I play anytime I am still for two minutes but I just don't feel the same insane pull to read the books that I once had. I have replaced them with EVERYTHING on JJ's list of erotic literature. The poor folks at Abe Books who filled my order the day of that post must think I am such a smut-hog. Whatevs. I am going upstairs, with my wine and I am going to read 6 pages of Eclipse before curling up with my kids and dreaming of Rob. Sick and sad, you can think it!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Since I'm the treadmill 7 days a week, and have been for the last 10 months I read the books in sequence over and over again. It hasn't got old yet though I have slipped Bel Ami and Water for Elephants in there as well and most of Bella's favourite books as well.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Um . . . ten. Ten times each - including Midnight Sun - and I have to read them in order. I do pick up something new each time I read them. [Not sure exactly what that says about me. Am I a poor reader? Or maybe I was just so sucked in and trying to soak up all the goodness the first time through that I missed little details?] Whatever. I only read them at breakfast and lunch now - no rush to get through them. But my nights and weekends are totally consumed by FFN. That's right. No real life anymore.

Before I became a Twitard, I was hooked on the Southern Vampire Series. After Twilight, I tried to go back and read Sookie and Bill again, but I just couldn't. Those vampires were just mean and nasty compared to the perfection that is Edward Cullen.

I'm not reading them just now, because last week I ordered several books of erotica As Seen On Twilighted [recommended by JJ.] Pretty hot stuff so far!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wow! I am embarassed how many times I've either read the paperbook series (at least 4 or 5 times); listened to the books on audio (at least 3 times); read the electronic version (only once); and, then watched the movie (more than 30 times - I'm sure). Plus, I've been to the B&B where the Prom Scene was filmed (anniversary present from my husband).

Like a couple of other people mentioned ... when the world is crappy and I need to escape, I head to Forks, WA. & the world of the Cullens ... & of-course Edward!

  105. Check it out . . I'm reading it now! 5x's a banger! I'm on the chapter where James is co-hersting Bellas to meet him at the Ballet Studio. Bella writes her farewell letter to Edward and seals her heart in the letter! Well isn't that just dandy!

I'm a functionable twi-addict! Work by day, dinner for the family at night, after that you better leave me alone to my twi-love.

  108. OMG--I'm laughing because I can't tell you how many times I have turned off Titanic right after Kate Winslet slaps her hand on the steamy car window. She was done...and so was I. Movie over.

I just skim now...I mainly do it on the throne. I haven't reread any of them "cover to cover" again. I don't think i've even read Breaking Dawn cover to cover...because I went into skim mode in that one. I have a sharp eye for sex scenes and used it to my advantage in that one...

  110. Well! I'm glad y'all like my bathroom tiles! LOL.

I haven't actually read an entire book in, er, awhile because I'm a skimmer. I like to find my favorite parts and reread them. I guess it is like comfort food - emotional/brain porn at its best, I suppose.

@Dead God Birk - We wait with bated breath. Really.

  111. Ok I am a cheater, after reading the books a couple of times, now I just go and read my fave parts. Like when Edward comes back and explains why the hell he left in New Moon. Ahhh, such a warm fuzzy feeling.

  112. I just realize the book on the floor scares me because it would make an awesome spot for a spider to lurk. You suck... and rock... but more of the negative than the positive at this moment.

  113. I read the entire series in 6 days the first time - and it only took that long because I had to wait 2 days for Breaking Dawn to actually be released. As soon as I finished BD I picked Twilight up and started through it again. And then again - skimming a bit that 3rd time. The last time I read Twilight cover to cover was last fall but I keep the entire series next to my bed so I can go back to my fave parts whenever I feel the need. I agree JJ - it is like confort food.
Lately it's all about the Twi-smut. The Sony Reader I got for X-Mas is probably going to die soon from over-use. Good thing I got the one I can hold and turn pages with one hand leaving the other hand free for... well... other things.

  114. I bought the audio cd's in Jan and listen to it over a couple of days. It was a different experience. I had to get used to the girls voice. After a while I could tell the diffence in the character changes. Even Mr. RM listened to the cd's with me and made references to the movie. LOL!

I plan on getting the rest soon.
