Apples and Lemonade

The world lost a true genius today. It pains the dark hole where my heart used to reside to report that Steve Jobs lost his battle with cancer today.

Requiem aeternam

The man invented the personal computer. If that wasn't enough, he invented the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. I honestly have no idea how many Apple products we have in our house. Our dining room table is a veritable Steve Jobs shrine. Apple has a lovely tribute to their founder on their site.

I am honestly too tired to come up with a decent segue for the second half of this post, so I am inserting an actual Segway.

I hate cancer with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. It has stolen our friends and family. It is indiscriminate in its targets. It must be stopped.

In conjunction with the release of the last two Twilight movies, Twihards and Twitards have united to raise money to help fight childhood cancer. Breaking Dawn will be no different. Fandom Gives Back is organizing another fundraiser from November 13-19th. Thanks to you, they have raised over $200,000 for Alex's Lemonade Stand the past two years. If you are an author, please consider donating your talent to this very worthy cause.

More information will be forthcoming, but make sure to mark your calendars and watch for instructions on donations and auction bidding. It's time to send cancer a clear message: You can't have any more of our loved ones.

  1. Great post TK! I love the childhood cancer fandom. Childhood cancer kills more than breast cancer, yet it has less fundraising.

  2. "an actual Segway" LMAO!! Great post. Cancer no bueno (obviously)and it's sad to see research stopped on potential drugs so they can focus on making old dude boners.

  3. almost didn't go to #Forks2011 because of cancer. my SIL is fighting for her life right now. both of her lungs collapsed and at 39 yrs old had to get a collostomy bag.

she's fighting for her life right now. when she had the surgery the dr's came in to give her the "death speech" she kicked them out of her room! this is why i love her and why i will contribute to the Fandom Gives Back.

Cancer is a disgusting horrible disease. if you can contribute please do! as someone who is watching someone i love fight this i would really appreciate h00rs support.

    thanks, Libby

  5. A colleague of mine also lost his battle with cancer yesterday... Someone said he imagines him having a deep conversation with Steve Jobs somewhere...

  6. As many of you already know, I'm the proud Mama of a cancer warrior. My now 18 year old daughter Katy was diagnosed with SAA/Lymphoma at the age of four and endured two years of death defying treatment before undergoing a life saving bone marrow transplant at age 6.

Cancer is a mean, cruel disease and indiscriminately steals children & adults...people of every race, color & creed. It does not care if you're rich or poor.

I've donated to FGB each time in the past and I intend to do it again. One day, no mother will be forced to watch her child suffer the way I did.

    One day soon.

    MC

    PS
ILY guise SO MUCH. Miss you.

  8. Cancer is such a terrible disease. I've lost a few family members to it and even had a brief scare a few years ago.

FGB has done a fantastic job at raising money for this cause and it's absolutely amazing!!

  9. My mom has battled cancer most of my life...starting when she was 27 (I was 8), she had ovarian cancer and as a result a full hysterectomy, to a few years ago when a tumor showed up in a routine scan...with several life-threatening events in between.

I too give to FGB (and Relay For Life/ACS) whenever I get the chance. In hopes, that one day no one will have to suffer/die from this terrible disease ever again.

@libbybelle - My thoughts and prayers are with your SIL, you, and your entire family. Keep us posted.

  10. All of these stories are bringing me to tears. Cancer sucks. I lost my Aunt to it years ago... I can't explain how awful it is to see someone suffer through this horrible disease. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who have lost loved ones or are having to see someone you love suffer through cancer. I will definitely donate whatever I can.

    Love you h00rs so much!

  11. Fandom Gives Back is the main reason I wrote TFB. It elevated the Twilight fandom and the guilty pleasure of fanfic to heady heights. When people chuckle at me/we Twi crazies I throw out the dollar amount we've all contributed to over the past few years and they shut the fuck up fast.

WHEN - not if - cancer is eradicated, we can all take a small slice of credit. Please donate a story or donate $ for a story or both - every little bit helps.

  12. Many of you know that my 'RL' is as a cancer nurse, working for a blood cancer support charity here in New Zealand. Throughout my career I have met some incredible people going through the hardest experiences of their lives, and it is a priviledge to help and support them, along with their families, during these times.

Steve Jobs was an inspirational man. I found it rather apt that I read of his death on my iPhone. Thanks, Steve. Rest in peace.
