Yo Man, You Got Any Kale Chips?

Last week I bought some kale chips at our local farmer's market. They were obscenely expensive, but I am trying to come to terms with the fact that good-tasting-and-good-for-me food is more expensive than only-good-tasting food like potato chips and cheese balls. Luckily the kale chips are also obscenely delicious.

These taste so much like cheesy pizza toppings that I am almost certain they are made with magic since they are both vegan and gluten free. Also it took me most of the week to "get it" and put the name and the logo together (it's kale leaves. in pants with a bow tie. Chippin' Kales. get it? GET IT? ok you are better than me).

So today I packed up a snack baggie with wholesome raw kale goodness and when I got to work I tossed it out on my desk...

 Did someone say it's 4:20?

So yeah, no more baggies filled with kale chips - gonna have to bring the whole box or none at all.

  1. That's funny. My other obsession is Adam Lambert and he's been talking up Kale chips for MONTHS! He went on a bender over Christmas and ended up in the Norwegian drunk tank and decided to cut out the drinking and go on a health kick. He talks about Whole Foods so much they tweeted him recently that they love him.

In any case I put them on my shopping list recently just to see what all the fuss is about. It's good to get a second great opinion of them, but it looks like I should be careful about packing them in baggies. Especially not good to send to school with your kids, eh? Imagine that call home!

    1. I just imagine myself in cuffs by the side of the road (after being pulled over for speeding, natch) going "REALLY, Officer! It's KALE!!! You HAVE to try one!!!"

  2. My daughter has been making these almost every night for the past few weeks. It's pretty easy and quick - you can find recipes on the inter-webs. I've never seen them in stores, but I'll bet you can make them yourself for about 0.0001% of what you're paying for them.

    1. I think ounce for ounce these were up there with gold. Or maybe just really good weed lol... (Seriously if this stuff were weed it would make the cover of High Times - I was transported back to high school just looking at it lol).

  3. BAHAHAHA....... I got some zig zags to help roll that ... Can you smoke kale?? Ok, but really, is it better tasting than grass?? It looks pretty green. Oh never mind..... Carry on.

  4. I love kale chips! It is much cheaper to make yor own though. Just get a bunch or two of kale at whole foods or a farmers market...I find that other places don't usually have it...also, I prefer the flat leaf kale to the curly stuff, but the curly stuff is easier to find. Cut it into chip size pieces. Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Spray with olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite toppings. I liked black pepper, sea salt and parmesan cheese. Bake at 325 for 20 to 30 minutes or until crispy. It makes a ton and costs about half as much as one bag of store made chips. They do crumble easily so I store in a Tupperware.

    1. I'm going to definitely try making my own, although they won't be the same as these... These are "raw food" so they have likely been dehydrated or put in a very low-temp oven (like just over 100 degrees) for a while. I don't know how they do it, but the taste and texture is great! Thankfully kale is pretty readily available here (like you said mostly the curly stuff).

  5. I usually just tear into small pcs, toss w/ olive oil and garlic salt and bake on 325 for about 20 min. Single layer on the baking sheet or they won't get crispy. I am insanely addicted!!

    1. I've definitely done more than my usual amount of tooth-checking after eating these! It's like the all-natural equivalent of eating an Oreo in that department...

    2. I really like the kale chips, especially the fun green teeth part, but the shattering is such a PITA. Ever tried crunchy roasted chickpeas?

    4. My homemade kale chips shatter like glass when I eat them. Maybe I'm doin' it wrong.

Search steamykitchen dot com for crispy roasted chickpeas; that's a nice one to start with.

  8. Those things look... gross but I do know they taste good.

Hey, STY, I think we're growing a shit load of kale in our garden. Better start copying down some of these recipes...

  9. I don't know....I've heard nothing but deliciousness, and everyone is talking about them, but I just...I don't know.

    A) I don't want to make them myself because I would fuck it up. They'd either turn into kale mush, or kale broken glass.

    B) They look to healthy.

  10. The TV show I was watching tonite had the people at a farmer's market and all she wanted was kale chips. They look interesting. Gluten free is a good thing.
