I agree with you about both si...@ JJ perfect sense!
I agree with you about both sides of the feminist coin. One thing that amazed me about Twilight was how something so regressive with such a pre-feminist passive heroine could reel me in! However having sat through really condescending conference papers where feminist acadmics basically accuse Twilight fans of having 'false consciousness', I thought it was time to think about the positives and the pleasure.

And yes, I thought your statements on the double-standards applied to male vs female desire were freaking articulate and spot on.

back in the 1940s there was a huge scandal about 40 year old women going to wrestling matches and ogling the man-meat. it's considered disruptive to the social order - women are meant to go away, have babies and cook the dinner, otherwise everything falls apart.

Also, Susan Sontag wrote back in 1972: "That older women are repulsive is one of the most profound aesthetic and erotic feelings in our culture.”

I think the whole MILF and cougar thing of the past few years is *really* interesting (even if I find it kind of disturbing myself), and shows some kind of seismic shift. perhaps something to do with the sheer size of the baby boomer generation: they worshipped youth and so are having to change things as they negotiate their own aging.

ok, no more essays from me -- as you can tell I love talking about this until the cows come home.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12123686614612629476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325136241555317156.post-62638182966445767602009-11-25T17:47:32.392-05:002009-11-25T17:47:32.392-05:00@Lisa - You wore Twitarded shirts! You have know i...@Lisa - You wore Twitarded shirts! You have know idea how happy that makes me.

I agree with you - I think there is definitely a positive slant to Twilight. In all honesty I probably could argue for both sides of the feminist coin but at the end of the day, I see what it is doing for women in our age bracket and think it's fucking fantastic.

I also find it interesting that so many other women are disgusted that we fantasize about shacking up with Edward Cullen (or Robert Pattinson). Um, IT'S A FANTASY!!! Why is it that it's almost expected of men to fantasize about (potentially)younger, beautiful women but it's a disgrace when women do it?

In fact, I bet people would be perplexed if a man openly admitted to lusting after an older woman like, say, Hilary Clinton (Just throwing this out there). People would want to know why. There is definitely a stigma that women of a certain age are no longer sexually attractive and therefore, not sexual at all.

That sucks.

Annnd sorry for the rant. You, STY and the community here are actually informing my research (in a very positive way), and a colleague and I wore Twitarded shirts to NM.

I'm finding that while Twilight is often criticised by feminists, it's actually possible to take a positive feminist slant on it by looking at how we (Twitards et al) use it to improve our lives (in terms of sex and friendships, and the fundraising for good causes).

the snotty feminists I saw recently giving a paper on how 'toxic' Twilight is, don't get that - but the Twitards do.

And this is why Twitarded rocks.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12123686614612629476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3325136241555317156.post-89785420298230454942009-11-25T11:42:04.711-05:002009-11-25T11:42:04.711-05:00@SparkleMindy - Gurrrl you made me Laugh out soooo...@SparkleMindy - Gurrrl you made me Laugh out soooo loud in the middle of a too quiet office!
