And Then I Decided It Didn't Matter...

I'll admit that I've been slightly anxious these past weeks about the fact that Water for Elephants wasn't allowing pre-release reviews... As far as I know, it's never a good sign when the critics aren't allowed to see a movie before the actual release date. So today while I was at work - when the reviews started rolling in - I kept refreshing the WfE page over a Rotten Tomatoes. I was disheartened - to say the least - to see it taking some punches (after hovering in the twenties for most of the day, it's come up to a less-pitiful 47% at last check).

Wait they said what now??? Wankers...

Critics love to hate on Robert Pattinson. And it's not just the professional reviewers getting in on the act... I love Seth Meyers, but I cringed a little bit when he introduced Rob on the Regis and Kelly Show with references to Edward and Twilight but not WfE... Rob's an easy target: a brooding on-screen heartthrob in a YA-novel-adaptation vampire series, with rabid fans who would happily pay to go watch him read the phone book for two solid hours. But honestly? I was getting bummed out by what appeared to be the critic's attempts to out-snark each other and find the best and most craftily-worded burn that incorporated vampires, circuses, or elephants to ill-effect (sometimes throwing in a few SAT words for good measure). The earlier reviewers seemed to be in a race to see who could put down the movie hardest and call dibs on "First!"

I was not happy.

And then...

And then...

And then I decided it didn't matter.

I don't care what any of the reviews say - I am PSYCHED to see Water for Elephants this weekend! Even though it looks like I'll be seeing it by myself... JJ and Myg have obligations, so we'll maybe shoot for a viewing one night next week. OK,that's a bit of a bummer, but this movie cannot NOT be visually stunning - I love the old-timey-ness of it. And a bunch of jaded movie reviewers cannot take that away from me. It's all I can do to keep from heading out to a midnight showing tonight! But I don't have Friday off (like apparently half the people I know do), so the late-late show tonight is pretty much out. I'm sure I won't be the only person at the movie theater flying solo! It will be worth it. I'm sure. Critics be damned.

Wherever these tracks lead? I want to go to there.
So what are you plans for seeing Water for Elephants??? I expect at least a few of you to be having full-blown circus-themed parties with appropriately silly cocktails and outfits. Tell me about it in the comments! I need to live this one vicariously through you...

  2. I am very excited to see WFE. I don't care what the critics say. There have been so many movies that were panned but became fan favs. Screw the critics.

I'm meeting Tiolie tomorrow to see it since we're both off. Yay!

  3. Yes, I definitely will be going to see Water for Elephants! Probably more than once just this weekend. I have read the book twice and I loved it. My husband actually read the book and he liked it too. My oldest daughter and my husband agreed to go and see it with me. A friend of my other daughter will be going to see it with me too. I hope that all Rob's fans will go and give it a great opening weekend! I agree! Fuck the critics! I loved Remember Me and the critics made me angry with the way they panned the movie.

  6. Remember when the critics bashed Remember Me last year? I can tell you as someone who hangs out on a film forum populated with people who do not like the Twilight saga (I hold the distinction of being known as 'That Chick Who Loves Robert Pattinson'), those who have seen it have admitted that the Pattz is really good in it even if the ending was, well, you get the idea.

I stopped giving a crap about critics when Avatar came out. Best movie of all time my arse.

  7. Critics opinions on the movie doesnt matter to me. What is the factor for me is, am I willing to shell out 8 dollars for a movie or wait until DVD?

I read the book and I would watch this movie even if he wasnt in the film. I love Reese and having Rob in it is just a major BONUS.

The 1930's, Reese, circus, Tai, Rob. Duh. Winning.

    v/w: clutt reviewers are clutts

  8. Effing Blogger. Ate my first post.I hate having to recreate brilliance.:)

Critics love to hate romantic movies.
And when did it suddenly become Rob's job to make or break this movie? Aren't there a few oscar winners involved here?

Baseline - if the film makes money, everyone will be happy. If not, there will be concerns.

Any guesses on what is making Rob so happy these days? He has been hysterical in interviews (Ellen, Kimmel) He's back to his old, dorky self instead of mr. serious.

    Theories:
Relief that he will never have to play Edward again.
    That cute little dog.
Kstew's been reading fan fiction and has upped the ante in the bedroom.

  9. I generally ignore the critics. Like Jael said above, those idiots thought Avatar was a good movie. Cue instant and complete loss of credibility.

I'm going to see WFE with the girls next week. Super excited!

  10. I actually am taking the day off from work to see it. I wanted to see the first showing but then my kids' daycare is closing at noon!!!
    WTF?!?!

Just because it's Good Friday? Don't they understand what they've done?

Well luckily I have an older son and he doesn't know it yet but he's watching his little brothers while I go get my Rob on...

And I'm going alone. I don't want anyone ruining the zexy scenes for me.

  11. I just got home from a screening and criticts can shove it up their ass. The movie is good. You have it right that they are in a race to one up each other on bashing Rob because of his fan base. At the screening I went to there wasn't a mass of fangirls there. The audience was a mix of all kinds of people. What critics are forgetting is that the movie is based on a book that has a fan base as well on that may have little to do with Mr. Pattinson. I'm sure the old lady with the walker who my mom was about to have a fight with over the asle seat isn't a Twilight fan. Even my mother who truly enjoyed the movie and has only seen Rob in The Goblet of Fire and Remember Me loved the movie. She didn't realize it was Rob till half way through the movie when she leaned over to me and asked " Is that the Twilight boy?" (yes my mother is insane). The only complaint i heard was that the a/c was broken.

I say go see the movie and screw the critics they are being elitis fucktards

  12. Fuck it and those uppity fuckity critics! I am going...probably more than once...and I, just know, I am going to love it. Nothing I have seen so far has made me cringe in embarassment for him so far....that is a good sign right? At 6:30pm tomorrow night I will be sitting in my seat (quite possibly with some ShamWows under me) ready to take it/him all in. "Ladies and gentleman....welcome to the greatest show on earth....Robert Pattinson" The.End.

  13. I haven't heard any so so or bad reviews YET, and now I refuse to go searching for them. I aggree, it doesn't matter. Sure, some of us (a lot of us) are Rob jaded and will love it even if it sucks...but I just don't see that happening....it sucking.

I can't see WFE tonight as I work tomorrow, and I am uber busy and have an event I have to "attend to" till about 7pm. Then I have stuff to do all day Saturday, and Sunday is Easter soo...Sista' and I going to go see it Monday night, and I can't wait! I'm sure I'll go see it again with @TwiloveSue and gang as well.

    xoxo J

  14. I'm beyond excited about this and don't care at all what the critics say about it either! Of course, I want it to be a major success for Rob, but I just know it's going to be wonderful.

And... I'm leaving for the midnight show in just 5 minutes (SQUEEEEEE!!!!). Then tomorrow night I'm going with Twifixx, ZAnyMouse & VampiresWeLove, and then again with TwiredJen and no doubt many more times after that :) Can't wait!!

  15. I NEVER pay any attention to critics. I am so looking forward to seeing this movie, and meeting up with IGiveUp to share the RobHotness with!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ha, I had to check your blog to read your take on the reviews. I, too, was curious all day, and finally had a chance to do a thorough search for reviews after work.

As someone who loves movies and -- don't hate me -- movie reviews, I have to say the New York Times's review of Pattinson's acting chops wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Which to me, knowing how hard they can stick it to an actor, is breaking even.

In any case, I agree, it really seems critics love to snark on Pattinson. It's part lazy writing/part Twilight animosity/part jealousy/tiny part truth. If Pattinson were a completely unknown actor, of course they'd go a lot easier on him. I don't think Pattinson is YET the greatest actor ever, but I also don't think he's awful, and when he's on screen I can't take my eyes off him, which is an intangible quality critics often fail to appreciate.

So, the takeaway: most bonafide film critics (the "cineastes") are not at one with the mainstream, and there's nothing wrong with that (if I want the mainstream take, I usually go to US Today or similar outlets). Because I love Rob, I will be happy if this movie makes money, and if he doesn't get completely slammed in the process. As long as the movie's not a disaster financially, our boy's career's OK. At this point, I have my eye on "Bel Ami," which I think has the best shot of giving Pattinson any real critical acclaim. In the meantime, I'll go to WFE, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

  17. Well FML! I just wrote MY long review from the midnight showing and blogger ate it! F. U. blogger!

Very nicely done. Go see it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I could not agree more. I am going to see WFE tonight by myself, as well. I don't care what the critics say. I have seen the previews and like what I've seen. I try not to read or listen to critics on movies I can't wait to see for fear a doubt might creep in. In case of this movie, no doubt is there-I just know I'm going to love it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm going to see it on Monday night (it's cheaper to go during the week lol) and I can't freakin wait. Every time the trailer comes on TV with that song playing in the background, I get goosebumps. Fuck the critics and their animosity towards Twilight, they need to get over it and stop letting it cloud their judgment. This will be a good movie, there's no doubt in my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There is a group of 7 of us (all ladies with age ranging fron 32 to 60) who are meeting tonight for dinner and going to see WFE. We have already bought our tickets.

Then my husband and I are going to see it tomorrow afternoon.

Then on Easter Sunday, because hubby has to work I intend on seeing it again in the afternoon!

Would imagine that I will see it again before it leaves the theaters as well at least 1 or 2 more times!

SCREW THE CRITICS! Some of the movies they think are the greatest ones ever made have left me wondering how I can get that 2 hours of my life back! I never pay attention to them. If anything I go see the ones they poo poo the most as they are usually the best ones out there! There was once this movie about some vampire family and a bunch of boys who turned into wolves...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yup - I am definitely done giving a rat's ass about what the critics say - there's no way I am not going to enjoy two hours of this, given how my jaw drops at the trailers... It doesn't have to be the best movie of all time EVER to be enjoyed. Thoroughly.

    : )

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really don't pay attention to the critics. Most are biased, IMO. I used to read the reviews, end up seeing the movie and loved it, despite their opinion. You are absolutely right, it doesn't matter.
I'm going with the Ladies of Twilight Junkies Anon and RobzSinger to see it TWICE today!!! Can't wait to see this film! The book was awesome. If you can get to Chicago area quick you can come with us Snarkier Than You! We'd love to have you with us.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, and if I were going to care about a particular critic's opinion, it would be his. He's fair and he's usually right on the money. And 3 out of 4 stars sounds like a solid B to me, which I think is great. But since I fully planned on seeing this movie no matter what the critics said (and that goes for any movie I want to see), I don't really care what the critics say. Like STY says, there's just no way this movie isn't going to be entertaining. The cinematography alone looks amazing, and when the landscape includes Rob, nothing more needs to be done!
I'm going to see it today at 1:30. CAN'T WAIT. I have to work all weekend, but then I'm off Monday, and I'm considering going again. WFE will get its box office money out of me, no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm gonna see it this afternoon... by myself as well... and I couldn't be more excited :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey Snarky! Going to see it at 1145 PDT today w/ a friend. I know what you mean about the damn typecasters (on Regis and Kelly). It's a pet peeve of mine.
We know it's good. Rob's good. Reese is good. What more can we ask for?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Reviewers don't mean a thing. I rarely read reviews. From what I heard they seemed to love that stupid movie with all of the blue people in it calling it the movie that changes everything. Hell, I can't even remember the name of that "blue smurfs in space" piece of crap.

Hell... ***I*** don't even like the Twilight movies, but it doesn't keep me from watching them and going to the midnight showings and buying the DVD's.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have vague plans with Mr TK to see the movie next week. I haven't picked a day yet. I really should get on that.

I am not even going to read the reviews because I'm going to see this movie multiple times no matter what. I can't wait!

  30. I just made plans with my Twi-lovie RL friend in town. We're gonna hit up the liquor store for some booze to sneak in, then grab some lunch, then go to the theater. I will be ordering a diet coke (something I never do) and proceed to suck it like I'm goin down on my landlord on the the 31st of the month. The rum will find a happy home in the now half-full cup, and we will be on our way to Rob in old-timey hotness.

Am I the only one who wears their best panties to Rob movie premiers? I know it's kind of counter-productive because of all the melting going on when he hits the screen, but I like him to know that I did a little something special for him :) *besides, I'm at the mall...I'll just pick up a few more pair!*

Love the caption with the pic: Wherever these tracks lead? I want to go to there.

    Amen.

Neither of my local theaters offered a midnight showing of WFE. On one hand I was relieved. I'm still trying to recover from the NYC weekend. It's hell to get old.

I am going to the movie tonight with my daughter and some of her friends who are like my other kids. I loaned each one of them the book to read and they are all excited to see the movie. Can't wait.

  34. It is now exactly 3.5 hours until my ass is parked in that theater with ShamWow panties firmly in place.

I may or may not be more excited for this movie than I was for New Moon, but don't tell Chris Weitz, okay?

I WISH I had been on the fucking ball enough to throw a bash, but considering I spent last weekend, just casually ACTUALLY FUCKING MEETING ROB PATTINSON (read: waited 15 hours in the rain and stalked the red carpet), there was no time left after stupid real life obilgations to do anything.

And now, it's exactly 3 hours and 15 minutes until I'm in that theater seat!

  38. Yeah yeah Yeah it doesn't matter but It was so GOOD!!!! I mean the people that I dragged to the midnight showing that did not know who Rob was, said it was GREAT! Really! And there is tons of Rob Face time, he is so hot with no makeup and that little haircut! Damn - See it!

  39. I know most of us don't read the reviews but still I must admit that this news of more bashing by the critics leaves me kind of depressed. The problem is, we don't pay attention to the critics, but some other people do, maybe a lot of them. I don't know. I have't seen WFE yet because the premiere is only next week in France, but the few reviews I've seen in the French press are extremely prejudiced and unfair. I wish we could make a "Criticizing the critics" post...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just got home from seeing it. It's fucking amazing. A lot of the audience clapped afterwards and it was mostly older couples!

I seriously have a hard on...

But honestly it is a great movie that I think will help Rob soar into great roles and start being taken more seriously. Although I don't give a shit either what people think.

    Serious wood.

  41. Saw it earlier today, and critics be damned. It's really good! Great performances by everyone, especially Christoph Waltz--he's incredible. Rob is beyond-words- beautiful, genuine, and believable. I loved him in this! Reese is great, strong yet vulnerable and I totally believed the chemistry between herself and the Pretty. It's understated and controlled, but it's definitely there.
    Go see it!!

  42. It is really a great movie. Beautifully done, and I will be seeing it for the 2nd time on Sunday.

  44. Just got back and this movie is WONDERFUL! Great job by everyone involved. The cinematography is beautiful. Rob is just devastatingly handsome and did a great job in this role. I agree that it will help him to move beyond being dismissed for "playing a vampire in a teen movie".

Well worth the $20 I got mugged for the tickets. (I went with my 15 yo daughter and I'm pretty sure she was the youngest in the theater. She asked me if Friday was seniors night. LOL)

  45. I just walked out of WFE - LOVED IT! Reese was cold, and didn't "own" Marlena, but Rob was great as Jacob. Loved the look of the film, loved the supporting cast/costumes, feel, etc. It was totally watchable and enjjoyable!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Preach it sister! I hate how these so-called-critic's, diss Rob and his acting. Why is it every actor he works with has nothing but high praise for Rob, yet these dork critics say the oppisite. The saddest fucking thing is that these Assholes give two thumbs up to anything Brad Pitt or Leo Decaprio do. To me, Rob is right up there. So why can't they see that? Why are they so hell bent on hating him? Is it because of Twilight?

    ReplyDelete
  47. The critics are stupid! Just got out and I LOVED IT! I read the book long before It was going to be a movie, and I loved that too! I was so excited when I heard they were making it and then when I found out Rpatz was playing Jacob I was really excited. My love of the movie has nothing to do with my love of him...and I LOVE him...hard. I thought he was amazing. He puts so much emotion into what he does and it's wonderful to see him change and move on from our beloved Edward.

With what I saw today, he will not always be Edward. He has got talent, and Christoph Waltz...I Hate him, he is so good. I agree with the post from before, Reese didn't "own" Marlena, like I would have wished, but I love her and she did a good job. It was a beautiful movie.

Damn though I have a hard time seeing the precious look like Hal Holbrok when he is that old. He will probably still be smoking hot.

I will see it again, just because 1) it was that good 2) I have a hard time concentrating when he is on, my brain goes all mushy.

  50. Rob was great in this movie! My friend & I that went to see it together were both very happy with the movie. I think that's saying a lot since we read the book! Critics just like to hate on RPatz because of the Twilight thing. I have some friends that are "twihards" that weren't going to see this movie because they think he's a terrible actor. Whatever! I like him more in movies that aren't Twilight related! Sorry! Venting some pent up hostility. You'd think he was my BF the way I defend him. LOL!

  63. I am very excited to see WFE. I don't care what the critics say. There have been so many movies that were panned but became fan favs. Screw the critics.

I'm meeting Tiolie tomorrow to see it since we're both off. Yay!
