Shake Your Groove Thang!

Note to self: find this song! Also, improve penmanship.

Back when I was in college I had a roommate who used to lock herself in her bedroom so that she could dance around like a maniac for an hour. This was exercise. Her music of choice was a mix-tape that she had christened "Marge's Bubble-Butt Workout Tape."

Music makes you want to shake your ass and move around. Well, some music does that. To me. When I hear a particularly peppy song with an awesome beat, I mentally add it to the STY worky-outy playlist that may someday get my butt off the sofa or get me out of bed early for a run. Or a brisk walk. Let's be realistic: I don't run unless being chased.

Anyway, at some point last week as I rocketed down Route 1 on my way to work, I heard a song on the radio that HAD to be added to the mix. I grabbed my trusty Sharpie and blindly scribbled out a reminder on the back of my shopping list and here it is (I can almost feel the calories melting away already - if only it was that easy) -

So what songs motivate you to shake your ass? Do you have a workout playlist or a "Marge's Bubble Butt" mix that gets you grooving? Share it in the comments! This may be the day that I actually create a playlist on my iPod...

  3. Okay, so I don't have a song that immediately comes to mind, but dang, girl that's a great song! Though I have to admit, when I saw his face--or rather, his BEARD, I got a little scared, lol! Thankfully, his voice did not match his face at all! It didn't quite get me off my butt, but I was dancing in my chair, if that counts! Btw, I have a great app on my phone, Shazam, and it tells you who sings the song on the radio (or TV), so I finally retired all the little scraps of scribbled paper all over my car! Try it!

    1. Hey it's got a good beat and sticks in your head (or it's stuck in my head now lol) - I can see it!

  6. I have so many! Here are the two that get the most play:
Angry workout for when I want to cut a muthafucker- All NIN, with Johnny Cash cool down.
To fucking early to be alive: All the Lady Gaga, Faster Kill Pussycat, The Eels, and Beck cool down

I love things with an obvious 8 count beat so I can pace myself without having to think about it.

  7. Groove is in the Heart gets me moving every time I hear it. Leftover from my marching band nerd days is a love of drumline cadences. I admit I watch that silly movie Drumline every time I see that it's on just for the music. In spite of myself I occasionally latch on to some mainstream pop song that I have never until now admitted to liking. You don't know you're beautiful by OneDirection is a perfect example. It's so ridiculous but it's so adorably catchy and when I'm cleaning the house I sometimes realize it's stuck in my head.

  8. Thanks for the beardy fix, STY!!

That is definitely one addictive little tune.

I'm a fan of... angry-ish music when I want to get my blood pumping so I'm probably not very helpful. But Oxford Comma by Vampire Weekend always gets me to bounce a little.

  9. Sandstorm by Darude. Seriously. I give myself heart palpitations every time I dance, dancing too hard to it. Also the video is so awesome.

  10. I've had a crush on this song for awhile- Colors by April Smith and the Great Picture Show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUiHwWmm-aI

And my new love is Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. "I Swear" is a booty mover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAaJusA3aVY but I'm an album girl. I consume these things in their entirety, not just as single songs.

Sorry I'm crap about embedding links.

  11. I've got a few right now...

Tom (Coming Home) by Shiny Toy Guns ... A badass cover. Yes, it was in a car commercial, but it was their breakthrough opportunity and I fucking LOVE it. It makes me want to kick some ass.

Lights by Ellie Goulding ... This song has a good warm up, it's a little poppy, but I like it.

Bruises by Chairlift ... If you are not tapping your toes and dancing around to this song, you cannot come to my dance party! It's so peppy and fun and their voices are so great!

I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You by Black Kids ... DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

Sexx Laws by Beck ... He will always be badass.
